"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

A view from the trail marker a half mile up the La Verkin Overlook Trail
I walked 1.01 miles and climbed 292 feet in 31 minutes this morning. Didn't have a lot of time, but I wanted to do some climbing, so I went as far as I could up the La Verkin Overlook Trail in 17 minutes, then retraced my steps. It was my second category 3 climb (Tortoise Rating: 0.6), and first since June 9.

I had a nice surprise this evening, after a meeting at Valley Academy, Ed Woodd wanted to walk with me.  Always more fun (and the time passes quicker) when you have a friend and a good conversation while walking! I walked 1.70 miles and climbed 118 feet in 33 minutes this evening.  Chapter 3 totals are 58.79 miles walked in 23 hours 13 minutes, with 2,946 feet climbed, and 11 swims totalling 4,240 meters in 4 hour 34 minutes. It was my seventh category 5 climb, and first since June 21.  Totals of my category 5 climbs is 14.54 miles with 1,149 feet climbed in 5 hours 12 minutes.

My weekly weigh-in was this morning:  257.4, down 1.0 pounds over the past week, and 12.4 pounds total for chapter 3 -- my recommitment since May 1.  The livestrong box in this blog's right column celebrates overall weight loss since starting with livestrong the year before.  And yes, I gained back all that I lost on my first try in 2011, plus about 3 extra pounds, hence the difference in reporting.

I set a new personal record in the swim this afternoon ... 810 meters in 1 hour, while carrying on conversations, shooting baskets, and just generally having fun with everyone.  After finishing the swim, I received wonderful coaching from Doug Jr. in his basketball clinic.  It is fun, but I feel similar to how I felt in tennis class my freshman year when I was banished to the backboard for the first 10 weeks until I could consistently hit the ball instead of air.

Even more exciting to me is that I feel pretty good afterwards!

Our family reunion is in full swing!  I enjoyed the food, focusing on trying to limit portion size ... so I shared the popcorn and lemonade at the theater and loved the homemade fried ice cream but somehow resisted the yummy cookies that came with them and kept being passed around during our evening activities.  It also meant I was in the pool in the morning and again in the evening.  The morning alone was a new personal record for me, 510 meters, all using the side stroke to conserve energy in the true tortoise time of 41 minutes.  Real life, one step, one decision at a time. :-)

Benjamin enjoying the view of Entrada from the top

The Tortoise, Wounded Duck, and Fredricksen are all smiles when the journey is complete!

Josh invited Benjamin, me, and anyone else in the family interested to come with him on a walk on the Halfway Wash/Paradise Rim trails near his home this morning.  We started early, a little after 6 am, to enjoy the relative cool of the desert morning.  This is a dirt trail, about half flat, and half a gentle grade, making for a good walk for the gradually improving tortoise and the rest of the Terreeeblay team.  Enough to know we had been on a walk, not enough to make us sorry ...  The views are beautiful, I would recommend this walk just for that alone.

We walked 3.49 miles in 1 hour 22 minutes today, including 328 feet climbed.  Tortoise Rating:  4.3.  Read on for a map and more:

View of the south side of Valley Academy with the Pine Valley mountains in the distance

I walked to the bank, then up to the Valley Academy Charter School construction site.  It was great to see that they have recovered from the serious wind damage just 1 1/2 weeks ago, you'd never know it to look at it now!

I walked 2.31 miles in 45 minutes today, including 115 feet climbed.  Read on for a map and more pictures:

This was an impromptu walk.  I passed the bridge where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses California Highway 58 in daylight, and since this happens rarely, it occurred to me that this was my chance to locate where the trail goes in both directions from this point, since sign markings are not as clear as I would like.  It was a

I reviewed my memorized devotional on the go this morning.  It always blesses me, the words are very powerful!

Next I walked to the grocery store near my office to get oatmeal, bananas, and bowls.  I get sturdy ones, that let me microwave old fashioned oatmeal with frozen berries for 6 minutes at 20% power.  Seems ironic I would like Vanity Fair bowls, but there you go.  It surprised me how much walking you do at the store.  I measured it with Humana Fit, without hitting the pause button for things like checkout.  Turned out to be 0.47 miles with 7 feet climbed in 11 minutes.  Every little bit helps ... you'll chuckle
