"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

This might be one of the more obscure places the tortoise has chosen for a daily walk.  It goes like this.  I was in appointments in the Long Beach, CA area until around 5 pm.  I still had a 420 mile drive waiting for me back home, and my walk to somehow get in.  First job was to figure out how to best escape the traffic.  Remembering that Interstate 15 headed up towards Cajon Pass is a heavy commute anytime, and is extra heavy currently because of construction on the interchange with Interstate 215 at Devore/Glen Helen/San Manuel (formerly Blockbuster) Pavilion (you know who has the economic power when a Native American casino buys out the naming rights to an outdoor performing arts venue from someone who used to be as big as Blockbuster was.)

I decided the least delays would be found by heading up to 710 to the 10 to the 5 to ... the 2! to the 210 to the 14 to the Pearblossom Highway (sometimes known as the 138).  Took me only about an hour to get here, not bad at all.  So ... where is it better to take a walk than outside a Mormon chapel?  Thank you Littlerock chapel of the Palmdale Stake.  I walked outside the gate the first few minutes until someone came to open it for Mutual, at which point I started doing laps around the building.  Like 30 of them.

Totals today:  3.73 miles with 45 feet climbed in 1:01:44 hours.  Tortoise rating:  6.1  Calories burned:  601.

Started my walk after 11 pm of an especially long workday on the road, so I visited my hotel's version of terreeeblay.  The machine forces you into cooldown at 60 minutes, so to go my usual extra piece, I started the treadmill over again, hence the two concluding pictures of the stats of my workout.

Totals:  4.13 miles at a steady 2% incline (436 feet climbed) in 1:15:28 hours.   Tortoise rating:  6.0.  Calories burned:  611.

Walked at my lunch break between tax preparation appointments today.  Parked my car at the Foothill Blvd. trailhead in Rancho Cucamonga and took the trail converted from the Pacific Electric railway to Euclid Street in Upland and back.  After lots of cold weather walks, the 79 degree conditions today were almost too pleasant ... I'm sure my heart rate was a little higher!  The round trip walk was 4.17 miles with 49 feet climbed in 1:13:19 hours.  Tortoise rating:  6.4.  Calories burned:  647.   For more pictures and a map, please click below to continue reading ...

I was trying to show my coat tied on my waist because it's too warm for it now, but when I finish this walk after dark and the wind picks up, perhaps I will need it.  What you did get to see is the smiling tortoise with a few boys already practicing on a ball field on a sunny afternoon in the first half of February.  When I'm hearing from Chief that they are cancelling major basketball games in North Carolina and Tio Guillermo is posting pictures of ghost town icy streets in downtown Atlanta, and my daughters have just barely stopped mentioning the polar vortex (and I suspect it's still cold in Beantown) ... I will take this!

As for my walk, it was 4.17 miles with 154 feet climbed in 1:18:08 hours.  Tortoise rating on the 1.12 mile uphill portion was 4.8.  Calories burned:  651.  There's a map and more if you click below to continue reading ...

Until we meet again ... dropping Sarah off at the SLC airport to head home to Florida.  She won't need that coat there!

It was a great visit!

Not to be outdone, today was a 4 walk day, albeit one of them is in the running for the shortest Terreeeblay walk ever.  The walks totalled 3.39 miles with 393 feet climbed in 1:18:54.  We had the walk to the Salt Palace, followed by the walk back to the hotel to retrieve the car and take Sarah to the airport.  A little later, I started walking around the Cracker Barrel parking lot in Springville while waiting for Benjamin to arrive.  That walk lasted all of 1 minute 38 seconds of brisk air goodness, then Benjamin arrived and we headed inside to get to the important business at hand.  Breakfast!

After saying goodbye to Benjamin, I studied the weather map, thinking about where I could walk to avoid the storms and get some hills to climb.  The Scipio Wild Goose trail was discovered!  Tortoise rating:  1.9 (including a half point for the snow I walked uphill in)  Calories burned:  571.

Another 3 walk day, totalling 3.53 miles with 56 feet climbed in 1:19:28.  Tortoise rating:  5.6.  Calories burned:  467.   Benjamin came up to meet us at Sweet Tomatoes for dinner, after which we found an indoor location for an after dinner walk.  GPS reception was poor, so we had to improvise on the stats, we did 6 laps plus a walk each direction across the parking lot, so if anything we went farther than claimed here.  We also got to try out some surprisingly comfortable cheap furniture ...

Had 3 little walks today that totalled 3.79 miles with 215 feet climbed in 1:17:52 hours.  Tortoise rating:  5.2.  Calories burned:  602.  First walk was from the hotel to the Salt Palace to start the day.  Second one was a quick round trip back to the hotel during a break to get a folder.  Third one was to see Temple Square while it was still light, get some dinner, and walk Sarah by the hotel we all stayed at the night before she married Darin.  Good memories!

Surprise!  Sarah came with me to Salt Lake today to attend the Roots Tech family history conference.  We parked the car at the Residence Inn and walked to the Salt Palace to register, then to Temple Square and to the Lion House for their chicken pot pie.  Yummy.  Good thing we got in 3.35 miles of walking with 166 feet climbed in 1:33:39 hours, which reflects how many starts and stops we did along the way. Tortoise rating:  5.3.  Calories burned:  590.   Don't know that I've ever seen a picture of the temple look quite the way the camera on my Android captures it, or Sarah's silhouette for that matter.

Walked to and from Valley Academy during the day, then walked to Lins to fill my Crestor prescription and continued down State Street to Main and back to end the day.  The pictures are a glimpse of my piece of the school, generally a couple times a week.  Today's walk totalled 3.79 miles with 118 feet climbed in 1:11:01 hours.  Tortoise rating overall: 5.8.  Calories burned: 591.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells me I am on track. I'm sure this is more numbers than you are interested in, all I can say is I'm really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because I don't do them every, every day.
