The Right Honorable Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965) (yes, I remember the sincere tributes given him when he died) http://www.wpclipart.com/famous/political/Churchill/Churchill.png.html |
Walked after my last appointment of the day (October 20) ...
not much daylight but I did get in 2.25 miles, with 256 feet climbed, on a short
segment of the Pacific Crest Trail in 51:32, a 22:56 minute per mile pace. Uphill half of walk before retracing my steps had a tortoise rating of 3.9.
Eating today 1,820 calories; most recent 7 day
total 13,616 calories. Please click on the line below to see a map and pictures
of today's category 5 walk:
You might notice the wiggly line to the right of the bright red line on the map. The wiggly line is the actual path of the trail, the red line is where the GPS thought I went ... so I suspect I covered more trail than the GPS is indicating ... fine by me, I like to do greater than or equal walking and less than or equal eating to what is reported. Phrased by a math geek at heart I know ...
I walked both directions from mile 339.5 to 340.3 of the trail, which brings my lifetime PCT miles hiked to 177.9 (see the right column of the Terreeeblay blog for more details on that). Here's some more pictures:

Find more Walk in San Bernardino, CA
Turn the corner and you are out of a quiet canyon and looking straight at one of the busiest highways anywhere.
if you look closely in the dark, you will see something I have never seen before ... a trail sign indicating McDonalds in 0.1 miles. (It was more like 0.4 miles, but if you had gone 20 miles from the last opportunity for even water, I'm sure you would welcome it, and since it was just around the corner if you had stayed on the trail you would never see it!
I was surprised to see that the crossing of Interstate 15 happens through a large storm drainage tunnel under the freeway! Guess they are counting on it being dry 99% of the year.
Doug has been asking every CA trip for awhile if I have been back to Togo's, which used to be a small chain of custom sandwich shops, to get my classic #24 turkey avocado on wheat. They've closed most of their locations I used to patronize regularly, including both Mountain Avenue in Upland and Haven just north of Foothill in Rancho Cucamonga.
So, I haven't taken the time to track one down for awhile, but on my way to my walk, this location at 14600 Baseline in Fontana (near Cherry) was just a few blocks from my last appointment of the day, so I got the sandwich which became dinner in the car ...
It was good, but no longer great. Basically Togo's has become an afterthought on the side of some of the Baskin Robbins locations in SoCal ... which means it isn't the same. The redesigned plain font sign should have been a tip off. No more Chinatown or Spikes, and while Togo's lives, it is a shadow of its old self. No better or worse than Subway. I'm out!

Today's final word ... from reading in Matthew 21 (Christ's parable of the householder and the husbandmen, v. 33-41, is sobering) and Mormon 3:

Today's final word ... from reading in Matthew 21 (Christ's parable of the householder and the husbandmen, v. 33-41, is sobering) and Mormon 3:
"And I would that I could persuade aall ye ends of the earth to repent and prepare to stand before the judgment-seat of Christ."
-- Mormon 3:22
This from a man who gave his whole life to two causes ... attempting to persuade his fellow countrymen (who chose extinction over listening to him (far worse than even choosing division two, Ledge)), and attemping to persuade people who would live many centuries in the future ... us ... to listen to him. If anyone had a right to give up and declare his efforts useless, it was him. Instead, he would have made Churchill proud with his strict adherance to the credo "never, never, NEVER give up!"
And if this is how Mormon felt about sharing his testimony ... what does that tell us about sharing ours?
Cheerio!
