"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

3-126

I got to enjoy walking with Doug Jr, Josh and Ethan, Benjamin, and Ryan Despain in Zion Park today (Labor Day, September 3).  My GPS went haywire and recorded a much longer walk than we actually did (if you look at the map closely, you will see it has us walking in the air more than once)

Please click on the line below for that map, lots more pictures, and other goodies:

So what were the real stats on the walk?  I know it took us 2 hours 15 minutes, not including the time we spent enjoying Scout Lookout.  Zion National Park's official web page on the Angels Landing Trail says it is a 5 mile round trip with 1,488 feet of elevation gain to Angels Landing.  Based on the sign at Scout Lookout that says 0.6 miles to Angels Landing, that would make the Scout Lookout portion we did 3.8 miles roundtrip.  Josh has been to Angels Landing multiple times, he assures me there is no more than a couple hundred feet of elevation gain in that remaining distance.  To be safe, I will count our elevation gain as 1,200 feet, which makes the average grade while climbing 11.96%.  I can't even get agreement from HumanaFit as to whether this was a category 1 or 2 hike, so again to be safe, I will call it category 2, my first of the Terreeeblay era.  (Note:  I did this walk again with Becca, Rachel, and Sarah on July 9, 2013, and have rated it as 1.0 tortoises, which backs up the "borderline" status on the HumanaFit categories.)
This bring my chapter 3 totals to 141.70 miles walked in 55 hours 35 minutes, with 10,203 feet climbed, and 14 swims totalling 4,640 meters in 4 hour 57 minutes.

Here are some more pictures.  It really was a delightful experience ... just look at everyone's faces, especially Doug Jr with arms in full victory salute!

Today's last word ...

"If life and its rushed pace and many stresses have made it difficult for you to feel like rejoicing, then perhaps now is a good time to refocus on what matters most."

Cheerio!

  2. The Wounded Duck is rising triumphantly from the ashes as a mighty Phoenix! He may look a little bruised, but it is all part of his metamorphosis!
