Welcome to the Hurricane Hill Trailhead |
I'm coming up on the 15th, which in any month is a deadline day for me. I've got a couple fiscal year-end tax returns I'm trying to get done.
So ... where could I go in less than an hour, climb a good hill to get my heart going, and make some more headway on scoping out the Hurricane Cliffs trail loop? Answer: I headed to the Hurricane Hill Trailhead, less than a mile from where Highway 59 begins its climb out of town, and started up the access road that leads to the block H and later to the Gould's Rim Trail. I went a little over a mile and retraced my steps, detouring a little to see if there is a way to avoid the quarter mile walk on the highway to get to the dirt access road. If there is, I couldn't find it, just fences to keep me out.
Total walk was 2.11 miles with 236 feet climbed in 44:18 minutes. Tortoise rating on the uphill half was 3.8. HumanaFit pegs it at category 5, which surprised me a bit because I have the full mile at 4.3% grade, and they have 0.85 miles of it at 5.0% grade. I thought 5% would rate category 4. And it does on the high quality tortoise rating system :-)

There's a nice map of the Hurricane Cliffs trail loop at the Hurricane Hills trailhead |

Welcome view of the dirt access road off to the left. Can't wait to get off this highway, only part of this hike I would suggest improving. The rest is terrific! |
|
Just starting up the access road |
|
View looking back as the access road gets started |
|
The road to the block H heads up the knoll to the right |
|
The main path continues to the left in between the knolls |
|
View after a mile, my turnaround point today |
|
loving the views as I walk back down |
|
At half a mile left, I head up here to see if there is a way to the homes across the highway from the trailhead. No luck today with that. |

I start having fun taking pictures of the sunset. By simply holding the camera up |

or down at the same point makes a BIG difference in lighting! |
I'm very familiar with this climb! Probably my second most climbed hill other than the LaVerkin Outlook, i used to run this almost every morning with Alex in High School..... good times to the tortoise
ReplyDeleteJosh recently told me he used to do that climb in high school as well. Where did you and Alex start when you did it -- where the dirt road meets the highway, at the trailhead a quarter mile away, or another spot? And ... does this change your mind about doing the downhill part with me next week ... would you now like to include this section for old times sake?
ReplyDeleteI used to run from the high school up to the top of the H and then back. And I'm not exactly proud of my fitness level right now so downhill might be the best :)
ReplyDeleteI'm excited to walk with you, you have a choice of 12, 9, 5.5, or 2.5 miles of mostly downhill trail to choose from. It's going to be great walking with you!
ReplyDeleteBenjamin can make it to the H, I Believe!
ReplyDeleteLet's start chanting now, Benhog, Benhog, Benhog ... You Can Do It! Should we put you on Facetime with him Rachel so you can lead the cheer tonight when he and Doug are watching Jabari play hoops? (Maybe T will be watching too since as you probably know Jabari is a very talented African American Mormon who passed on BYU to play for Duke. Our guys can then throw trash talk at each other in fun ...)
