"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

14-339

Mile 959.  Tortoise picked up some of his grandchildren for a sleepover complete with a pizza dinner before heading to the theater to watch Heroes 6 - great fun!  His idea of multi-tasking was to walk 2.28 miles to the bank rather than drive, just before picking up his grandchildren. 39 feet were climbed in 1.14 miles along the way, for a 5.8 tortoise rating.  The rest of the path was flat or downhill.  Lou burned 356 calories in 36:48 minutes doing this.

Please click below for a map and today's walking thought by Virginia Pearce that includes:  "
if people are really going to learn something, they need more than an explanation; they need an experience"

Cheerio!

2014 Stats:

959.23 miles walked, which is 95.83% of my 2014 goal.
302:09:26 hours walked, which is 96.54% of my 2014 goal
46,855 total feet climbed
151,963 calories burned
92.97% of the year has passed
I've walked 65 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on September 20, and overall have walked on 278 of the 291 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 95.53% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.

And now for today's walking thought, originally presented in October 1993:

"After living for twenty years in the same ward, I married and moved to a distant city, where my husband continued his schooling. The people were friendly, but I was shy by nature and struggled to feel comfortable. ... Brother Goates was one of many who had extended themselves in becoming acquainted with us. As he shook my hand, he said, “Virginia, get off the back row and quit thinking about yourself!

"All at once I saw with a new perspective. He was right, but I didn’t quite know how to quit thinking about myself. However, as the weeks moved on, the acceptance of a calling automatically moved me off the back row, demanding that I think about someone besides myself. My comfort and confidence grew proportionately. Callings and assignments are easy ways to become involved in the lives of others. Paradoxically, as we concentrate on the needs of others, our own needs become less controlling."
