"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

14-365

Tortoise ended 2014 at Mile 1,021.  It was cold again today, but Lou bundled up and got it done.  For today's numbers and walking thought by David Haight, please click below to continue reading ...

Cheerio!

Today's walk was 2.85 miles, with 52 feet climbed in 55:24 minutes, giving it an average 5.7 tortoise rating. 418 calories were burned on this walk.

My walking map provider, www.mapmyfitness.com, has changed formats recently and the maps haven't transferred to this blog as well since.  Instead of embedding the map, let's try this link and see if that works better for you to see where Lou walked today:

Here are the final stats for 2014:

1,021.21 miles walked, which is 102.02% of my 2014 goal.
319:54:23 hours walked, which is 102.21% of my 2014 goal (which was to walk 1 hour a day each day for 313 days)
48,820 total feet climbed
161,749 calories burned
100.00% of the year has passed

I've walked 8 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on December 23, and overall have walked on 298 of the 313 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 95.21% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014)

And now for today's walking thought, initially presented in April 1994 (Willyne, this one is dedicated to you and your lovingly prepared book on the final week in the life of our Savior) ...

"Our scriptures teach us gospel truths, inspired writers add to our understanding. We have learned that during the last days of His mortal life, Jesus had withdrawn from all public teaching and spent the Wednesday before Passover in Bethany in seclusion. The next day, Thursday, Jesus instructed Peter and John to go to Jerusalem, where they would find a room prepared so they could meet together."

  1. Congrats on such an awes year! The 1021 miles walked is massively impressive but the best number might be that consistency number of 95.21%! Pure awes tortoise!

  2. I agree. Actually the whole point of this endeavor in 2014 was to get as close as I could to walking every day. Getting over 95% meant only missing 15 days out of 313 throughout the year. I never got close in any previous year, and I had been trying since at least 2009. Now the effort will be to see if I can pull a Pat Riley back to back ...

    P. S. I'm really going to miss Stuart Scott
