"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-35

Mile 102.  Tortoise had work appointments along the way home from California today, and got a couple short walks done nestled between the work.  The first was 2.12 miles on city streets in Mesquite, Nevada; the second was 2.15 miles on the Chuckawalla Trail, just off busy highway 18 a very short distance north of St. George, Utah.  Amazing how such serenity can exist so near so much activity!

For more on these walks, including a generous sampling of pictures and today's walking thought by Ted E. Brewerton, please click below to continue reading ...

Cheerio!

West Pioneer Blvd. in Mesquite

lots of colorful plants along the Chuckawalla

This is a popular trail with mountain bikers.
Tortoise gave more than one directions to the trails
they were looking for based on the signs he had
seen along the way.

Runners too!

The final climb back to the Chuckawalla trailhead, the signs for which
thousands of motorists pass daily on highway 18.

Trailhead signs to tell you where this trail fits in with all the others.
Lots of good trail choices in this country!

Tortoise completed today's walks in 1:22:50 hours.  Tortoise ratings were 4.2 and 4.3, based on 262 feet climbed in the 1.06 mile uphill portion in Mesquite (average elevation 1689) and 197 feet climbed in 1.00 miles of uphill on Chuckawalla trail (average elevation 3039).  626 calories were burned in total on these two walks.

Tortoise's walking map provider, www.mapmyfitness.com, has changed formats recently and the maps haven't transferred to this blog as well since.  (Lou keeps strying without success.)  Instead of embedding the map, let's try these links and see if that works better for you to see where he walked today:

And here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

102.41 miles walked, which is 10.22% of Lou's 2015 goal. On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 107.71 year-to-date miles.

31:02:52 hours walked, which is 9.92% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year)

4,796 total feet climbed, compared with 5,992 feet on this day in 2014.

14,585 calories burned

9.58% of the year has passed

Lou has walked 38 consecutive non-Sundays since his last missed day on December 22, and overall has walked on 328 of the 343 non-Sundays since the beginning of 2014, a 95.63% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014)

And now for today's walking thought, initially presented in October 1995:

"I do not wish to be light-minded, but I believe we should ask ourselves if we truly and seriously place our faith where it belongs and rely upon the merits of Christ. Do we have an assurance that salvation comes only through him and that he will take upon himself our burdens and sorrows if we place unwavering faith in him? ...

"Every ecclesiastical authority of any church and every agnostic should rejoice and praise God for having sent the priceless Book of Mormon to them or to us. Why?Because it is a sacred, second, undeniable witness to the world that God lives and Jesus is the very Christ, our Redeemer."
