"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-36

Mile 106.  Another two walk day!  The first was less than a mile with a steep climb and remarkable views in St. George between appointments.  The second was a traditional 3.23 mile La Verkin loop in the evening.  For more on these walks, including more pictures, today's walking thought by Harold G. Hillam, and other fun highlights of the day, please click below to continue reading ...

Cheerio!

One of St. George's better kept secrets -
Brooks Nature Park at the very top of Main Street

Tortoise parked there because he noticed on a map there was a short trail with a nice
climb.  Lou wanted to see if he could find it, and if it had nice views.
He was not disappointed!  It starts tame enough ...

Including a duck pond!

Walk around a corner, and the incline appears!

That's Red Cliffs Parkway on the other side of the railing up there.

Near the top

Here's the look from the trailhead on Red Cliffs Parkway.
Lou plans to return another day to check out Owen's Loop

How many times have you driven by and never noticed this trailhead?
If you want to park and start walking here, your choices are: where
Tortoise did (in the Brooks Nature Park) or at Pioneer Park (a short
distance east on Red Hills Parkway)

If you look down over the rail along the walk/bike trail adjacent to Red Cliffs
Parkway, this is what you will see!

Brooks Nature Park.  A well kept secret.  Come enjoy!

Tortoise mentioned "other fun highlights of the day".  That would
be the Special Needs Mutual Roadshow presentation of
"Saturday's Warrior", held in the Hurricane Fine Arts Center Theatre
this evening

It was close to a full house -- probably 450 people came and cheered these
special performers!

It was great fun for all!
Tortoise completed today's 0.73 and 3.23 mile walks in a total of 1:05:12 hours.  Tortoise ratings were 2.8 and 5.6, based on 132 feet climbed in the 0.37 mile uphill from Brooks Nature Park (average elevation 2998) and 85 feet climbed in 1.62 miles of uphill portion in LaVerkin (average elevation 3222).  645 calories were burned in total on these two walks.

If you're wondering why there is not a "3 tortoise walk" label on this blogpost from the 2.8 rated Brooks Nature Park walk, it's because it's less than a mile in length ...  This climb will get your heart going, but it is over almost before it starts.  All the same, Tortoise recommends it as a well rewarding walk!

Tortoise's walking map provider, www.mapmyfitness.com, has changed formats and the maps haven't transferred to this blog as well since.  (Lou keeps trying without success.)  Instead of embedding the map, let's try these links and see if that works better for you to see where he walked today:

And here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

106.37 miles walked, which is 10.62% of Lou's 2015 goal. On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 107.71 year-to-date miles.

32:08:04 hours walked, which is 10.27% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year)

5,013 total feet climbed, compared with 6,158 feet on this day in 2014.

15,856 calories burned

9.90% of the year has passed

Lou has walked 39 consecutive non-Sundays since his last missed day on December 22, and overall has walked on 329 of the 344 non-Sundays since the beginning of 2014, a 95.64% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014)

And now for today's walking thought, initially presented in October 1995:

"As I look at you this evening, I can see many young men with their valiant fathers and loyal priesthood leaders seated side by side. These fathers and leaders are ready to pay the price, yes, even sacrifice, for the success of you young men.
"In the spirit of sacrifice, I recall a conversation I had some years ago with my stake president in Idaho. We were discussing the forthcoming Aaronic Priesthood/Scout campout. I explained to him that it would be necessary for each person to bring his own sleeping bag, to which the president replied, “I have never slept in a sleeping bag.”
"I quickly responded, “President, you can’t be serious. You have lived in beautiful Idaho all these years and you have never slept in a sleeping bag?”
“Nope!” he said, “I never have. But I have sure lain in a lot of ‘em.” And then he went on to say, “And I’ll lie in a whole bunch more of them if it will help to save boys.”
