"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-157

Mile 445. Tortoise walked a loop to access Confluence Park from the Riverwoods entrance, avoiding crossing the SR-9 construction until past it to the north.  Lou then climbed out of the park on the Confluence trail, recrossing SR-9 near the LaVerkin bridge and south of the heavy construction activity.  For additional pictures, a map, along with further details and the day's walking thought by Gordon B. Hinckley, please click below to continue reading ...

Cheerio!

Mile 1.  Wanlass Park

End of the SR-17 highway walk segment (from 640 to 900 North)

Mile 2.  Riverwoods neighborhood

Mile 2.5 Confluence Trail rejoins the dirt access road at the entrance parking lot.

The gate for the north continuation of the Confluence Trail is off to the left.
It is unmarked other than the existence of the walkers gate

Nice view of La Verkin Creek along the Confluence Trail

Mile 3 at the welcome sign

Turned around to look at the beautiful sunset just past mile 3

Mile 4 along the Virgin River just past the abandoned power plant
Tortoise completed today's 5.02 mile walk in 1:34:44 hours.  Tortoise rating was 4.0, based on 358 feet climbed in the 1.690 mile uphill portion (average elevation 3145). Calories burned were 739.

Here is a map of today's route:

And here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

445.07 miles walked, which is 44.42% of Lou's 2015 goal. On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 436.02 year-to-date miles.

135:10:48 hours walked, which is 43.19% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year)

22,354 total feet climbed, compared with 20,304 feet on this day in 2014.

66,423 calories burned

43.13% of the year has passed

Lou has walked 23 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11. Overall he has walked on 126 of the 135 non-Sundays in 2015, a 93.33% consistency rating.  This compares with 124 days walked after 135 non-Sundays in 2014 (a 91.85% consistency rating).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent. And Tortoise feels much more vibrant when he is consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you)

And now for today's walking thought, initially presented in April 1999:

"Thanks to the Lord for His Blessings.
"Now the curtains are gradually closing on this notable and exceptional century. In one respect it has been a shameful period in the history of the world. It has been the worst of all centuries, with more of war, more of man’s inhumanity to man, more of conflict and trouble than any other century in the history of the world. It has been the bloodiest of all seasons. It has been a time when the adversary of truth has brought his evil influence of destruction and misery and pain to millions upon millions, as witness what is going on in Yugoslavia. The Father of us all must weep as He looks down upon His quarrelsome children.
"But in a larger sense this has been the best of all centuries. In the long history of the earth there has been nothing like it. The life expectancy of man has been extended by more than 25 years. Think of it. It is a miracle. The fruits of science have been manifest everywhere. By and large, we live longer, we live better. This is an age of greater understanding and knowledge. We live in a world of great diversity. As we learn more of one another, our appreciation grows. This has been an age of enlightenment. The miracles of modern medicine, of travel, of communication are almost beyond belief. All of this has opened new opportunities for us which we must grasp and use for the advancement of the Lord’s work."
