"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-254

Mile 727 on a beautiful late summer evening in La Verkin.  So many different directions Lou could take this post.

It is the 14th anniversary of the day none of us will ever forget, and Tortoise's heartfelt wishes go out to the families who have to deal with the memories every day and especially this day.  We were there atop the World Trade Center as a family just nine weeks earlier.  We still have blazed in our minds the elevator operator, and the lady who sold us postcards.  And in a horrible instant they were gone just like that.  "A day that will live in infamy" surely is just as applicable as it was in Pearl Harbor.

Tortoise's son Doug named him Lou, in honor of the baseball legend Lou Gehrig.  Tortoise strives for consistency, but the idea that he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse leaves him near speechless.  Speaking of baseball, two days ago was the 50th anniversary of arguably the greatest pitching performance ever ... Sandy Koufax's perfect game.  Doug posted a terrific Grantland article filled with wonderful video clips commemorating this, and Lou got to read, watch, and listen this evening.   Truly remarkable.  He hopes you will check it out for yourself.

Speaking of consistency, this is Tortoise's 999th published post and Lou did go for a walk.  If you'd be kind enough to click below, Tortoise would love to tell you about it ...

Cheerio!

Today's walk was 2.96 miles, with a 5.6 tortoise rating earned by climbing 80 feet in the 1.48 mile uphill portion at an average elevation of 3222.  The walk burned 438 calories in 55:43 minutes.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

727.90 miles walked, which is 72.64% of Lou's 2015 goal. On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 726.24 year-to-date miles.

222:34:11 hours walked, which is 71.11% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year)

37,131 total feet climbed, compared with 34,689 feet on this day in 2014.

109,120 calories burned.

69.65% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 106 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11. Overall he has walked on 209 of the 218 non-Sundays in 2015, a 95.87% consistency rating.  This compares with 206 days walked in the same period in 2014 (a 94.50% consistency rating).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent. And Tortoise feels much more vibrant when he is consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you)

And now for today's walking thought by Jorge Zeballos ...

"Let us press forward by learning our duty making correct decisions, acting according to those decisions, and accepting the will of our Father."

The tortoise is smiling!
