"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Mile 778.  Welcome to La Verkin!  Lou thought this was an especially good time of day, and of year, to go get an aerial view of his home town, so he climbed to the observation point ... and then kept going and made it a loop (and it's easier on the knees coming down that way).  There's more pictures where this one came from, so please click below and check them out ...

Cheerio!

Tortoise hopes you agree with him when he calls this the La Verkin Scenic Circle loop.  Or at least the east half of it.  His full loop would also include Confluence Park.

Today's walk was 5.92 miles, with a 1.2 tortoise rating earned by climbing 837 feet in the 1.68 mile uphill portion at an average elevation of 3538.  Essentially all of the climbing came in the initial climb to the observation point, as you can see by the deep colors on the left side of the elevation chart above.  The walk burned 875 calories in 1:50:02 hours.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

778.18 miles walked, which is 77.66% of Lou's 2015 goal. On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 759.06 year-to-date miles.

237:54:02 hours walked, which is 76.01% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year)

40,877 total feet climbed, compared with 36,031 feet on this day in 2014.

116,668 calories burned.

73.48% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 118 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11. Overall he has walked on 221 of the 230 non-Sundays in 2015, a 96.09% consistency rating.  This compares with 216 days walked in the same period in 2014 (a 94.35% consistency rating).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent. And Tortoise feels much more vibrant when he is consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you)

And now for today's walking thought by Eduardo Gavarret ...

"'Come unto me,' 'Follow me,' and 'Walk with me' are invitations containing inherent power--for those who accept them--to transform your life and generate a change within you that will lead you to say, '[I] have no more disposition to do evil, but to do good continually.' (Mosiah 5:2)

"As an outward manifestation of that change, you will feel the strong desire to 'succor the week, lift up the hands which hang down, and strengthen the feeble knees.' (D&C 81:5; see also Isaiah 35:3)"

The tortoise is smiling!

  2. We went there with our planetary scientist son-in-law to see another major eclipse a few years ago and, yes, it's a great place to observe one! Lots of other people agree -- that was by far the most people I have ever seen up there.
