"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-299

Mile 874.  Tortoise had two appointments in St. George today.  After the first one Lou had a break, so he left his car where it was parked and headed out for a walk, after which he went to the second meeting.  The walk included parts of the Hilton Drive, Santa Clara River, Virgin River, and Bloomington Hills trails, plus a few blocks of city streets to connect to the trail system.  The clear weather and hilly terrain made for great picture taking conditions, so please click below to continue reading, and enjoy ...

Cheerio!

Looking south as Lou is starting towards Black Cliffs Drive

The Crystal Inn advertises a bike trail on site.  Here's the entrance,
which leads to the city trail system, including a map.

Now on the Hilton Drive trail between the freeway and the car lots.

The trail ends by going through a nice tunnel under Dixie Drive.  Lou then
turned left on the Santa Clara River trail to head to the Crosby Family
Confluence Park trailhead.

Now on Rachel's favorite section of the Virgin River trail

Now it's time to cross this nice bridge over the Virgin River.

And climb the hill to connect to the Bloomington Hills trail

One of three trailheads in the Bloomington Hills neighborhood.  Great access!

Today's turnaround point

All turned around now and looking the other way.

Looks like a new Spring Hills Suites hotel is about done being built near
the Convention Center.

Pretty bird!

About to complete the Hilton Drive trail northbound and return to the city streets.

Today's walk was 5.12 miles, with a 4.2 tortoise rating earned by climbing 395 feet in the 1.83 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 2613.  This walk burned 760 calories in 1:30:42 hours.

Weigh-in:  224.8.  This was pretty much dead even (a 0.1 pound decrease) compared with Lou's last weigh-in on October 19.  Tortoise's idea of how to lose weight ... very gradually.

Lou also completed a post from earlier in the year on March 31 in his continuing effort to catch the blog up with his walks.  Please click here to read all about it.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

874.90 miles walked which is 87.32% of Lou's 2015 goal.  On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 856.31 miles.

267:57:07 hours walked which is 85.61% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year).

46,858 total feet climbed, compared with 42,060 feet on this day in 2014.

131,145 calories burned.

81.79% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 144 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11.  Overall he has walked on 247 of the 256 non-Sundays in 2015, a 96.48% consistency rating.  This compares with 243 days walked in the same period in 2014 (a 94.90% consistency rating).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.  Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's walking record up until 2013 with 2014 or 2015 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you).

And now for today's walking thought ...

"Our Savior's Atonement does more than assure us of immortality by a universal resurrection and give us the opportunity to be cleansed from sin by repentance and baptism.  His Atonement also provides the opportunity to call upon Him who has experienced all of our mortal infirmities to give us the strength to bear the burdens of mortality.  He knows of our anguish, and He is there for us.  Like the good Samaritan, when He finds us wounded at the wayside, He will bind up our wounds and care for us (see Luke 10:34).  The healing and strengthening power of Jesus Christ and His Atonement is for all of us who will ask.  I testify of that as I also testify of our Savior, who makes it all possible.  One day all of these mortal burdens will pass away and there will be no more pain (see Revelation 21:4).  I pray that we will all understand the hope and strength of our Savior's Atonement:  the assurance of immortality, the opportunity for eternal life, and the sustaining strength we can receive if only we will ask."

-- Dallin H. Oaks, "Strengthened By The Atonement of Jesus Christ", October 2015 LDS General Conference
