"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-12

Mile 26.  The snow lingers in the mountains, but what a warm, beautiful afternoon for a walk it was!  OK, it was only the mid 40s, but it felt great to Tortoise!  Lou repeated yesterday's walk, and added a short distance around the corner at the turn around point.  He is starting to move at a nice pace, perhaps his doctor is pleased with his increased heart rate along the way.  Today's walking thought is by William Walker ...

Cheerio!

Today's walk was 2.73 miles and had a 4.7 tortoise rating earned by climbing 191 feet in the 1.37 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 3285. This walk burned 474 calories in 40:06 minutes, a pace of 14:41 minutes per mile.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

26.06 miles walked which is 3.82% of Lou's 2016 goal of 683 miles.  His goal for this date is 21.75 total miles.

7:02:10 hours walked which is 3.36% of the 2016 goal (which is to walk 40 minutes a day on the 314 days other than Sunday in the year).

2,007 total feet climbed in 2016, compared with his goal of 1,218 feet.

4,199 calories burned.

3.18% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 211 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 314 of the 323 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.21% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.

And now for today's walking thought ...

"The two-pound coin of the United Kingdom has inscribed on its side 'Standing on the Shoulders of Giants.'  When I think of our great pioneer forefathers, I feel that we are all standing on the shoulders of giants."

-- William R. Walker, "Live True to the Faith", April 2014 LDS General Conference

The tortoise is smiling!

  1. my favorite medieval quote
It's been around for a long time.
    from Wikipedia:
-- "The attribution to Bernard is due to John of Salisbury. In 1159, John wrote in his Metalogicon:[1][2]
-- Bernard of Chartres used to compare us to [puny] dwarfs perched on the shoulders of giants. He pointed out that we see more and farther than our predecessors, not because we have keener vision or greater height, but because we are lifted up and borne aloft on their gigantic stature.[3]
-- "According to medieval historian Richard Southern, Bernard is comparing the modern scholar (12th century) to the ancient scholars of Greece and Rome:[4]"
