"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-23

Mile 54.  Lou found him some new hills to climb.  His doctor would be very happy, as his heart, lungs, and arteries all feel like superscrubbers went in and cleaned house.  Tortoise even went a little further than he intended ... his usual pattern is to go 20 minutes, maybe one or two more as a bonus, and then do the same the other direction.  Today, he had his phone on power saver mode, which meant he couldn't see the screen well enough to do anything (including to take it off power saver mode).  In his exuberance, he wound up going 25 minutes before turning around.  So the good doctor is even happier.  Today's walking thought is by Robert Hales ...

Cheerio!

A brief pause in the up slope before turning to the left and going higher

And rewarded with panoramic views

Today's walk was 2.99 miles and had a 3.2 tortoise rating earned by climbing 472 feet in the 1.50 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 2742. This walk burned 456 calories in 50:32 minutes, a pace of 16:54 minutes per mile.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

54.69 miles walked which is 8.01% of Lou's 2016 goal of 683 miles.  His goal for this date is 43.50 total miles.

14:34:13 hours walked which is 6.96% of the 2016 goal (which is to walk 40 minutes a day on the 314 days other than Sunday in the year).

4,467 total feet climbed in 2016. Wounded Duck has challenged Tortoise to climb more than the 61,316 feet climbed in 2015 -- but in 40 minutes, rather than an hour daily.  To accomplish this, Tortoise needs to climb an average of 196 feet on each of the 314 walking days in 2016  ... assuming he misses no days at 6 days per week all 52 weeks (definitely quite an assumption!).  But playing along with Wounded Duck, this would mean climbing 3,920 feet in the 20 walking days so far in 2016.  So far, so good, but stay tuned.  This is a tough goal.

8,873 calories burned.

6.37% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 221 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 324 of the 333 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.30% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.  And of course, he also wants to keep the Boredom Committee supplied with plenty of boring numbers so those good folks will be happy ...

And now for today's walking thought ...

"Children and youth love to be included.  We make a serious mistake if we assume that the conference is above their intellect and spiritual sensitivity.  To the young members of the Church, I promise that if you will listen, you will feel the Spirit well up within you.  The Lord will tell you what He wants you to do with your life.

"In conferences we can receive the word of the Lord meant just for us.  One member testified:  'As I listened to your address, I was astounded. ... Your talk was personal revelation directly from the Lord to my family.  I have never experienced such a strong manifestation of the Spirit in my life as those minutes when the Holy Ghost spoke directly to me.'"

-- Robert D. Hales, "General Conference:  Strengthening Faith and Testimony", October 2013 LDS General Conference
