"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-71

Mile 181.  Lou walked home from work tonight on another beautiful evening by way of Hurricane's Heritage Park, part of which is pictured above.  The walking thought was by Russell Ballard ...

Cheerio!

Today's walk was 3.28 miles and had a 5.4 tortoise rating earned by climbing 114 feet in the 1.64 mile uphill portion. Average elevation was 3246.  This walk burned 515 calories in 53:56 minutes, a pace of 16:27 minutes per mile.  It was Lou's twenty-fifth 5k walk of 2016.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

181.00 miles walked, compared with Lou's goal for this date of 194.27 miles.

13,092 total feet climbed so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 11,956. Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- but in 16 minutes less each day than his 1:07:04 hour average in 2015.  So far in 2016 Tortoise's walks have averaged 48:17 minutes each.

His average pace so far in 2016 has been 16:16 minutes per mile, slightly more tortoise like than his goal of 16:05 minutes per mile, but a noticeable difference from his 18:25 minute per mile pace in 2015.

Lou has walked 262 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 365 of the 374 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.59% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.  And of course, he also wants to keep the Boredom Committee supplied with plenty of boring numbers so those good folks will be happy.

And now for today's walking thought ...

"As we think about the imagery of succoring the weak, lifting up the hands which hang down, and strengthening feeble knees, I am reminded of a sweet seven-year-old showing her grandfather a small tomato plant she had started from seed as part of a second-grade school project.

"She explained that from one tiny seed would come a plant.  And if the plant were cared for, it would grow many tomatoes that would each have many seeds.

"She said, 'And if all of those seeds were planted and grew more tomatoes, and you planted all of those seeds, in a few seasons you would have millions of tomatoes.'

" 'All,' she said in amazement, 'from one little seed.'

"But then she said, 'I almost killed my plant.  I left it in a dark room and forgot to water it.  When I remembered the plant, it was all wilted and dead looking.  I cried because I thought of all of those millions of tomatoes that would never grow.'

"She was then excited to tell her grandfather about the 'miracle' that happened.

" 'She explained, 'Momma said maybe the plant wasn't dead.  Maybe all it needed was some water and some light to bring life back.

" 'And she was right.  I gave the plant some water, and I put it in the window for light.  And guess what?' she asked. 'It came back to life, and now it's going to grow millions of tomatoes!'

"Her small tomato plant, so full of potential but so weakened and wilted from unintentional neglect, was strengthened and revived though the simple ministration of water and light by the little girl's loving and caring hands."

The tortoise is smiling!
