"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-155

Mile 428.  Tortoise enjoyed movie night at home with his family.  His sweet lady had been telling him for months how much he would enjoy this movie, and she was right, of course.  Many memories came back of growing up in the height of the Cold War (that didn't feel all that cold, actually).  Yes, we really had those discussions, watched those films of nuclear destruction, and did those drills in school.  Perhaps you have heard Lou not so jokingly imitate the once frequently heard broadcast:  "This is a test of the Emergency Broadcast System.  This is only a test.  If this were a real nuclear emergency, you would be vaporized instantly."  Those days weren't all bad, of course, and tonight was most enjoyable!

Following the show, Tortoise walked round trip to the Red Box at Maverik to return the movie.  Walking thought was provided by Dieter Uchtdorf, appropriately tonight, he told of a nurse who asked a simple question of the terminally ill patients she cared for ...

Cheerio!

Tonight's walk was 2.61 miles, done in 47:25 minutes at an average pace of 18:10 minutes per mile. This route had an average tortoise rating of 5.5, earned by climbing 75 feet in the 1.31 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 3221.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

428.09 miles walked, compared with Lou's goal for this date of 423.57.

29,876 total feet climbed so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 26,068. Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- but in less time each day than his 1:07:04 hour average in 2015.  So far in 2016 Tortoise's walks have averaged 55:42 minutes each.

His average pace so far in 2016 has been 17:18 minutes per mile, compared with his 18:25 minute per mile pace in 2015.

Lou has walked 334 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, 2015. Overall he has walked on 437 of the 446 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.98% consistency rating.

One step at a time can lead to great things!

And now for today's walking thought ...

"A nurse who cares for the terminally ill says that she has often asked a simple question of her patients as they prepared to depart this life.

"'Do you have any regrets?' she would ask.

"Being so close to that final day of mortality often gives clarity to thought and provides insight and perspective.  So when these people were asked about their regrets, they opened their hearts.  They reflected about what they would change if only they could turn back the clock.

"As I considered what they had said, it struck me how the foundational principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ can affect our life's direction for good, if only we will apply them."

The tortoise is smiling!
