"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-198

Mile 555.  Lou was helped by his sweet lady, and by neighbor Shy, moving some filing cabinets this morning.  His walk came as the sun was fading this evening, so there are some nice sunset shots tonight, some involving the river.  Tortoise always likes those.  Cheryl Esplin provided the walking thought ...

Cheerio!

Today's walk was 3.39 miles, done in 1:04:24 hours at an average pace of 19:00 minutes per mile. This route had an average tortoise rating of 4.o, earned by climbing 295 feet in the 1.35 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 3135.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

555.86 miles walked, compared with Lou's goal for this date of 541.40.

37,754 total feet climbed so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 33,320.  Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- but in less time each day than his 1:07:04 hour per day average in 2015.  So far in 2016, Tortoise's walks have averaged 58:01 minutes each.

His average pace so far in 2016 has been 17:44.6 minutes per mile, compared with his 18:25 minute per mile pace in 2015.

Lou has walked 371 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, 2015. Overall he has walked on 474 of the 483 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 98.137% consistency rating.

And now for today's walking thought  ...

"Michelle described the morning as being one of constant squabbling between [five year old] Ashley and three-year-old Andrew--one wouldn't share and the other would hit.  After helping them work things out, Michelle went to check the baby.

"Soon, Ashley came running in, angry that Andrew wasn't sharing.  Michelle reminded Ashley of the commitment they had made in home evening to be more kind to each other.

"She asked Ashley is she wanted to pray and ask for Heavenly Father's help, but Ashley, still very angry, responded, 'No.' When asked if she believed Heavenly Father would answer her prayer, Ashley said she didn't know.  Her mother asked her to try and gently took her hands and knelt down with her.

"Michelle suggested that Ashley could ask Heavenly Father to help Andrew share--and help her be kind.  The thought of Heavenly Father helping her little brother share must have piqued Ashley's interest, and she began to pray, first asking Heavenly Father to help Andrew share.  As she asked Him to help her be kind, she began to cry.  Ashley ended her prayer and buried her head on her mother's shoulder.  Michelle held her and asked why she was crying.  Ashley said she didn't know.

"Her mother said, 'I think I know why you're crying.  Do you feel good inside?' Ashley nodded, and her mother continued, 'This is the Spirit helping you feel this way.  It's Heavenly Father's way of telling you He loves you and will help you.'

"She asked Ashley if she believed this, if she believed Heavenly Father could help her.  With her little eyes full of tears, Ashley said she did.

"Sometimes the most powerful way to teach our children to understand a doctrine is to teach in the context of what they are experiencing right at that moment."
