"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-203

Mile 569.  It was a two-walk day.  The first came before sunrise, which has been the standard experience this summer.  It was a little shorter than usual, because Lou had an appointment at Roadrunner to get his car oil changed at 7:30.  While the oil was being changed, Tortoise made a beeline west on Center Street and down to the bottom of Cactus Cliff Trail on his second walk.  He did this both to once again enjoy the view and to get in some quality hill climbing.  Got to keep the heart beating and the doctor happy!

Today's walking thought is brought to you by Henry Eyring ...

Cheerio!

Lou's first walk

And his second.

Today's walks totalled 3.95 miles, done in 1:13:10 hours at an average pace of 18:31 minutes per mile. This route had an average tortoise rating of 3.0, earned by climbing 326 feet in the uphill portions that totalled a mile.  Average elevation was 3168.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

569.86 miles walked, compared with Lou's goal for this date of 554.14.

38,852 total feet climbed so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 34,104.  Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- but in less time each day than his 1:07:04 hour per day average in 2015.  So far in 2016, Tortoise's walks have averaged 58:09 minutes each.

His average pace so far in 2016 has been 17:45.4 minutes per mile, compared with his 18:25 minute per mile pace in 2015.

Lou has walked 375 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, 2015. Overall he has walked on 478 of the 487 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 98.152% consistency rating.

And now for today's walking thought  ...

"As a young man I worked with a contractor building footings and foundations for new houses.  In the summer heat it was hard work to prepare the ground for the form into which we poured the cement for the footing.  There were no machines.  We used a pick and a shovel.  Building lasting foundations for buildings was hard work in those days.

"It also required patience.  After we poured the footing, we waited for it to cure.  Much as we wanted to keep the jobs moving, we also waited after the pour of the foundation before we took away the forms.

"And even more impressive to a novice builder was what seemed to be a tedious and time-consuming process to put metal bars carefully inside the forms to give the finished foundation strength.

"In a similar way, the ground must be carefully prepared for our foundation of faith to withstand the storms that will come into every life.  That solid basis for a foundation of faith is personal integrity."

The tortoise is smiling!
