"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Mile 579.  It was warm and hazy when Tortoise went walking around 10 am on this semi-holiday in southern Utah.  Semi-holiday because the actual holiday was yesterday, most of the celebrations were Saturday, but state and local government offices and the banks are closed today.  And Lou's office is in the middle of moving.  At the moment the next step is for Century Link to move the phone line to the new place so the office tech guy James can connect them there.  It was a good opportunity to get sweaty and walk somewhere he hasn't been in a few weeks.  Today's thought while walking was provided Ulisses Soares ...

Cheerio!

Looking northwest on the West Cinder Knoll trail about a mile from the office.
Normally the red rocks of Babylon and the Pine Valley Mountains are crystal
clear down this path.  Today ... not so much.

Choices.

Right will take you towards the bottom of East Cinder Knoll,
where the trail vanishes.

Straight takes you a short distance to a dead end at the fence
at the boundary of the Red Rock reserve.

Slight left takes you directly up a steep path to the top of West Cinder Knoll.

It is quite warm already.  Tortoise chose to take the trail furthest to the left,
which is a more gradual climb to West Cinder Knoll.

A little further up, the trail becomes a loop around the top of the knoll.
Today Tortoise started to the right and returned on the path to the left.
He's done it the other direction previously.

The path to the left completes the loop.  That's where Lou went today.
There is no sign, and Tortoise hasn't tried the path to the right yet.
He's guessing it's a dead end at the reserve boundary.

Back to the junction of the loop with the West Cinder Knoll trail.

Today's walk was 4.04 miles, done in 1:24:10 hours at an average pace of 20:50 minutes per mile. This route had an average tortoise rating of 4.6, earned by climbing 311 feet in the 2.02 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 3330.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

579.59 miles walked, compared with Lou's goal for this date of 563.69.

39,510 total feet climbed so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 34,692.  Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- but in less time each day than his 1:07:04 hour per day average in 2015.  So far in 2016, Tortoise's walks have averaged 58:16 minutes each.

His average pace so far in 2016 has been 17:47.5 minutes per mile, compared with his 18:25 minute per mile pace in 2015.

Lou has walked 378 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, 2015. Overall he has walked on 481 of the 490 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 98.163% consistency rating.

And now for today's walking thought  ...

"Jesus Christ established the perfect behavior pattern by which we can build upon our attitudes to be able to fulfill these sacred covenants.  The Savior banished from His life any influence that might take His focus away from His divine mission, especially when He was tempted by the enemy or by his followers while He ministered here on earth.  Although He never sinned, He had a broken heart and a contrite spirit, full of love for our Heavenly Father and for all men.  He humbled Himself before our Father in Heaven, denying His own will to fulfill what the Father had asked of Him in all things until the end.  Even at that moment of extreme physical and spiritual pain, carrying the burden of the sins of all mankind on His shoulders and shedding blood through His pores, He told the Father, 'Nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt.' (Mark 14:36)."
