"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-278

Mile 777.  Lou walked north from the La Verkin west chapel this evening, until he got to the Confluence Park trail access at the curve where the 360 West and 600 North streets meet.  From there he dropped down to the main Confluence Park trailhead, then took the Confluence and Cactus Cliff trails back to the west end of Center Street.  Tortoise used city streets to his starting point from there.  He can't get enough of the peace he finds in Confluence Park!  Walking thought was provided by Thomas Monson ...

Cheerio!

Today's walk was 3.36 miles, done in 1:06:18 hours at an average pace of 19:44 minutes per mile. This route had an average tortoise rating of 4.5, earned by climbing 287 feet in the 1.68 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 3125.

Today's weigh-in:  221.1, a 1.5 pound increase compared with Lou's last weigh-in on September 19.

This was #hike16 of Lou's 52 Hike Challenge.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

777.01 miles walked, compared with Lou's goal for this date of 757.96.

Tortoise has climbed a total of 55,049 feet so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 46,648.   Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- as a way to get the 125 heart rate his doctor suggests for these walks.  So far in 2016, Tortoise's walks have averaged 59:17 minutes each, compared with his daily average of 1:07:04 hours the previous year.  He enjoys seeing what he can do in an hour and change each day!

His average pace so far in 2016 has been 18:09.6 minutes per mile, compared with his 18:25 minute per mile pace in 2015.

Lou has walked 439 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, 2015. overall he has walked on 542 of the 551 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 98.367% consistency rating.

Today's walking thought was "Until We Meet Again", by Thomas S. Monson from the October 2011 LDS General Conference.

"I leave you with my witness and my testimony that God our Eternal Father lives and loves us.  He is indeed our Father, and He is personal and real.  May we realize and understand how close to us He is willing to come, how far He is willing to go to help us, how much He loves us, and how much He does and is willing to do for us."

The tortoise is smiling!

  1. We used to take Reinee down to Confluence Park at dawn. One day an aggressive skunk came out and sprayed her. I walked her back out to the Riverwood entrance and asked Terry to go home and return in the pickup. Reinee and I rode home in the truck bed. It was an exciting day.
The next day, the skunk was waiting for us in the same place but I was more alert. We skirted the beast in a wide arc and managed to finish our walk unscented.

  2. I've been blessed to not encounter the skunks in Confluence Park but I have certainly smelled evidence of their presence. Glad you were able to avoid him the next day!
