"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

14-221

After visiting a friend a few miles up the road in Virgin, Utah, Tortoise headed over to the town's BMX bike track as a starting point for today's walk on the search for the other end of the Flying Monkey Trail.  Just the name is exciting!  Tortoise got a good walk in, and although he didn't find what he was looking for, he thinks you'll enjoy the pictures.  There are no signs to help out, but with the help of Google Earth, Tortoise believes he has found the path and will go back sometime soon to confirm this.

The walk itself was 3.55 miles with 303 feet climbed in 1:30:43 hours.  Tortoise rating:  4.3: calories burned:  616; temperature was in the 95-100 range throughout this walk.  Tortoise wore his wide brim hat and was glad for his water bottle!  For a map, additional pictures, and some other fun, please click below to continue reading ...

Cheerio!

Doug Bray, this one made me think of you.  The views of the Kolob
Terrace section of Zion National Park in the distance are nice too!

A half mile up from the BMX track, Tortoise encountered this 5 point path junction.
No signs anywhere.  Today's walk followed the slight right path.  Next time he'll
try slight left.  More on that presently ...

Another unmarked path junction at 0.8 miles.  I went right (straight ahead)

It only took a quarter mile for this path to reach this dramatic end at a bluff.

So Tortoise headed back to the last junction, where he headed left this time.

This is one of many places where the path splits in half and later rejoins itself.

The second path gets us close to the bottom of the bluff with Smith's Mesa at its top.

But eventually this path too turns into a maze of paths a mountain bike rider
would absolutely love!  Tortoise stopped to take his video and started back,
having used his time for today.

Back to the black tortoisemobile.  The views to the east from our carefully chosen
parking place, off the road but not in the sagebrush, are dramatic.

Here's the path for next time.  Take the slight left fork at the 5 point junction a half
mile from the BMX track, follow it to a T intersection, then turn right to the start
of the Flying Monkey Trail, where we just might have us a beyond tortoise climb!
Check back here often to see when Tortoise tries this again!

2014 Stats:

631.79 miles walked, which is 63.12% of my 2014 goal.
199:40:55 hours walked, which is 63.80% of my 2014 goal
30,175 total feet climbed
100,895 calories burned
60.70% of the year has passed

I've walked 60 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on May 31, and overall have walked on 179 of the 190 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 94.21% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells me I am on track. I'm sure this is more numbers than you are interested in, all I can say is I'm really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because I don't do them every, every day.

The tortoise is smiling!
