"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

14-252

The Paparazzi building expansion across the street from Tortoise's office is beginning to take shape, shown at the start of his 3.67 mile evening walk (it was raining. hard. pounding. sheets. this morning)
done in 1:05:23 hours.  225 feet were climbed on the 4.9 tortoise rated path and 572 calories were burned.  For more, including a map and an expansion on Dallin Oaks's observation that "The peace the gospel brings is not just the absence of war. It is the opposite of war.", please click below to continue reading ...

2014 Stats:

719.36 miles walked, which is 71.86% of my 2014 goal.
227:17:00 hours walked, which is 72.61% of my 2014 goal
34,075 total feet climbed
114,874 calories burned
69.01% of the year has passed

I've walked 25 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on August 11, and overall have walked on 204 of the 216 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 94.44% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells me I am on track. I'm sure this is more numbers than you are interested in, all I can say is I'm really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because I don't do them every, every day.

This evening's walking thought comes to you from Dallin H. Oaks:

"The peace the gospel brings is not just the absence of war. It is theopposite of war. Gospel peace is the opposite of any conflict, armed or unarmed. It is the opposite of national or ethnic hostilities, of civil or family strife.
"In the midst of World War I, President Joseph F. Smith declared:
'For years it has been held that peace comes only by preparation for war; the present conflict should prove that peace comes only by preparing for peace, through training the people in righteousness and justice, and selecting rulers who respect the righteous will of the people. …
'There is only one thing that can bring peace into the world. It is the adoption of the gospel of Jesus Christ, rightly understood, obeyed and practiced by rulers and people alike.' (Improvement Era, Sept. 1914, pp. 1074–75.)
"A generation later, during the savage hostilities of World War II, President David O. McKay declared,
'Peace will come and be maintained only through the triumph of the principles of peace, and by the consequent subjection of the enemies of peace, which are hatred, envy, ill-gotten gain, the exercise of unrighteous dominion of men. Yielding to these evils brings misery to the individual, unhappiness to the home, war among nations.' (Gospel Ideals, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book Co., 1953, p. 280.)
"Such has been the message of the prophets in all ages."
The tortoise is smiling!

  1. John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you, peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid...

2 Nephi 2:25 - ....men are that they might have joy.

What a world we could live in if everyone understood the concept that pleasures are fleeting and temporary at best, and only true peace/joy comes from things that are everlasting and eternal in nature. With so much fear/doubt circling us about on every corner, the easy answer is to drown it out with your chosen distraction (pleasure) of the moment.....what a great thought to keep us centered, balanced and focused. Thanks Awes!!
