"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

14-294

It was a two walk day for Tortoise today.  He drove his dear lady to the Las Vegas airport so she could visit our daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren far, far away.  Too far.

A short distance from the airport is this fine trailhead pictured above, located just south of Sahara on Lamb.  Tortoise parked nearby and headed out.  First order of business was to cross Lamb on the bridge pictured above and head west to the US 95/I-515 freeway, which was where Tortoise left the Flamingo Arroyo trail on his last adventure on it back on July 25 (It's worth clicking on that link just to see the picture of the Mighty Turtles one more time!).  Once that was done, he retraced his steps and then continued east with a plan to go as far as Nellis and return.  Tortoise made it most of the way before construction forced a retreat.  When you click below to continue reading, you'll see a picture of that along with other pictures, a description of the day's second walk, plus maps of both walks.  And today's walking message by William Bradford.  It includes the thought "Nothing suits the devil better than to become a silent partner with us."

Cheerio!

The gate is a precursor of construction to come, but it was open and no
construction was in sight ... yet

Benjamin, this was my view when responding to your comment
on a previous post.  The Stratosphere makes quite a landmark
from throughout the Vegas Valley.

The end of the line for today.  I'll come back when it's done. :-)

The colorful Jerome D. Mack Middle School on Karen Avenue
shares the trailhead.  Tortoise is just about done for this walk.

But not before seeing these pretty flowers.  Even in the desert
you can find beauty, sometimes you just have to look a little
closer to see it :-)
This first walk was 3.20 miles with 55 feet climbed in 1:01:52 hours.  Tortoise rating was 6.2 and 503 calories were burned.  Which brings us to ... the second walk ...

To get a little bonus, I parked the car 1.10 miles from the house and walked that last piece home from work as evening approached.  There were 182 feet climbed in 22:52 minutes, mostly up the hill after dropping down to the river and crossing it.  Tortoise rating was 3.0 and 177 calories were burned.

2014 Stats:

838.61 miles walked, which is 83.78% of my 2014 goal.
264:50:33 hours walked, which is 84.61% of my 2014 goal
40,700 total feet climbed
133,896 calories burned
80.51% of the year has passed

I've walked 26 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on September 20, and overall have walked on 239 of the 252 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 94.84% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.

And now for more of today's walking thought,

"Nothing suits the devil better than to become a silent partner with us. He knows that we have agency and are at liberty to make choices for ourselves. He also knows that while in mortality we are subject to time. If by his subtle means he can become our silent partner, he can then influence us to make wrong choices that use up our time unwisely and prevent us from doing that which we should."

The tortoise is smiling!
