"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

14-345

Mile 975.  Ball past Lincoln along the Santa Ana River Trail as far as mile 16, then back.  A beautiful December afternoon as you can see!  Lots of other bicyclists and runners were enjoying it with me.

Please click below for more pictures, a map, and today's walking thought by Elaine Jack ...

Cheerio!

I walked about a quarter mile to access the trail from my parking place on Main St.
in Orange near Taft St. The river separates Orange from Anaheim here, on the other
side of the bridge Taft is known as Ball.  This picture is a just over a half mile up
the trail from the Ball - Taft bridge

The trees add a lot to the walking experience :-)

Today's turnaround point at Mile 16.  A tiny waterfall is visible on the river.
Ahead is the Glassell bridge.  The trail is turning with the river and beginning
to follow the 91 freeway.  (For those of you who share Tortoise's love of useless trivia,
California highway 91 follows the route of the same old US 91 as the industrial park in
Hurricane sits on. If only someone had written a song about 91 like they did 66 ...)

Headed back.  Here's the view at Mile 15, looking the opposite
direction from the picture shown above.

Today's walk was 3.76 miles, with 47 feet climbed in 58:05 minutes, giving it a 6.7 tortoise rating.  615 calories were burned.

Bring on the comments about this not being a very tortoise like pace ... :-)

Here are the overall stats so far for 2014:

975.93 miles walked, which is 97.50% of my 2014 goal.
307:13:31 hours walked, which is 98.16% of my 2014 goal
47,637 total feet climbed
154,532 calories burned
94.57% of the year has passed
I've walked 70 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on September 20, and overall have walked on 283 of the 296 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 95.61% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.

And now for today's walking thought, originally presented in April 1994:

"Charity helps us maintain our footing when all around us are skidding about.
"Priscilla Samson-Davis, a sister in Ghana, has known struggles. There have been many rocks on the path of her life. As a teacher she has watched families nurse children through dysentery and malaria, work hard, barter daily for sacks of rice, onions, tomatoes, any food to keep their loved ones alive. She serves as a visiting teacher, regularly traveling on the bus to see a sister on the other side of town. When asked if this task were a burden, given all she had to manage, she simply replied, “It’s not hard. The woman I visit can’t read. When I go, I read the scriptures to her.”
"Her simple answer testified to the faith and assurance she had that she was on the proper path. Though her bus route was halting and likely wound up and down streets, in the Lord’s eyes it was truly straight and narrow, for she was going in the right direction. She was about her Father’s business."

  1. What's this, actual blue skies behind the cloud cover in your pictures?? Definitely a beautiful day for the tortoise to be out enjoying the fresh air in So Cal! Love the consistency as always, and so excited for you as you start on the final stretch. Congratulations on all your hard work this year, and for being right at the doorstep of your goal!!

  2. It's been raining about 8 hours now. Projected to stop this afternoon. If it doesn't, I will be walking with Terreeeblay today. But if it does clear up, just think of how beautiful it will be all cleaned up from the rain. Tortoise is excited just thinking about it!
