"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-138

Mile 384.  Featuring Cactus Cliff Trail in Confluence Park today.  It's the access to the park from the west end of La Verkin's Center Street, and if you use it to leave the park as Tortoise did this morning, you get a nice 200 foot climb to get your heart pumping in just 0.4 miles from the Confluence Trail junction to the park boundary.  Lou loves this cliff, both because he is amazed how the cacti can cling to life there, and because when you get up close it reminds him of Devils Postpile National Monument.  For more pictures, details, and the day's walking thought by Ronald Halverson, please click below to continue reading ...

Cheerio!

Panoramic views begin almost immediately as you climb

Tortoise began today's walk as a loop from Roadrunner, where he had a quick follow-up repair done that was found during last week's oil change.  Lou walked 200 North, 300 West, and 500 North before accessing Confluence Park from the dirt road down from 560 West.  He signed the park register, then used the Confluence Trail to reach the Cactus Cliff Trail, after which he walked Center Street, 300 West, before returning to Roadrunner on 200 North.  His car was ready for him when he arrived!

Lou completed today's 3.56 mile walk in 1:11:16 hours  Tortoise rating was 4.4, based on 315 feet climbed in the 1.78 mile uphill portion (average elevation 3134), most of which was on the short Cactus Cliff climb as discussed earlier.  52u calories were burned along the way.

Tortoise's walking map provider, www.mapmyfitness.com, has changed formats and the maps haven't transferred to this blog as well since.  (Lou keeps trying without success.)  Instead of embedding the map, let's try this link and see if that works better for you to see the details of their version of today's walk:

And here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

384.21 miles walked, which is 38.34% of Lou's 2015 goal. On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 387.39 year-to-date miles.

115:36:24 hours walked, which is 36.94% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year)

19,625 total feet climbed, compared with 18,610 feet on this day in 2014.

57,535 calories burned

37.70% of the year has passed

Lou has walked 6 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11. Overall he has walked on 109 of the 118 non-Sundays in 2015, a 92.37% consistency rating, compared with 111 out of the first 118 non-Sundays in 2014 (94.07%).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent. And Tortoise feels much more vibrant when he is consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you)

And now for today's walking thought, initially presented in October 1998:

“I continue to ask myself,” she said, “why me? Why me? I am so blessed.”
"Her humble, sweet spirit and testimony touched me deeply. As she left, we both shed tears of joy and appreciation.
"I have often thought of that experience, and each time I do, it brings a deep feeling of gratitude for our Savior and what He has done for us, for the price that He paid to make it possible for each one of us to find inner peace in a troubled world."
