"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-239

Mile 683.  Lou took another stroll from his office up to the West Cinder Knoll trail.  Today's version included a straight shot up the east face, then meandering down in a loop.  Shown above is a view looking east towards part of Hurricane from the top.  For other Tortoise pictures, along with a map and other details of this walk, along with the day's walking thought by Dieter Uchtdorf, please click below to continue reading ...

Cheerio!

The north part of West Cinder Knoll is on the left, Pine Valley Mountains
are straight ahead, and the bright colors of Babylon are just to the right.

Just a little farther down the trail, pretty much the same view,
plus a little brighter sunset.

Here's the face of West Cinder Knoll.  It doesn't last long, but it is steep while it does.

Sunset from the top,

View northeast towards Smith's Mesa as Lou loops back around.
If you look very closely near the middle of the picture you can
see a horse and rider enjoying another loop of the trail.

This was a 3.31 mile walk, with a 4.6 tortoise rating earned by climbing 249 feet in the 1.66 mile uphill portion at an average elevation of 3315.  The walk burned 492 calories in 1:05:39 hours.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

683.53 miles walked, which is 68.22% of Lou's 2015 goal. On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 680.78 year-to-date miles.

209:28:48 hours walked, which is 66.93% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year)

34,616 total feet climbed, compared with 31,883 feet on this day in 2014.

102,542 calories burned.

65.50% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 93 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11. Overall he has walked on 196 of the 205 non-Sundays in 2015, a 95.61% consistency rating.  This compares with 193 days walked after 205 non-Sundays in 2014 (a 94.15% consistency rating).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent. And Tortoise feels much more vibrant when he is consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you)

And now for today's walking thought:

"I am here because I desire with all my heart to follow my Master, Jesus Christ.  I yearn to do all that He asks of me in this great cause.  I hunger to be edified by the Holy Spirit and hear the voice of God as He speaks through His ordained servants.  I am here to become a better man, to be lifted by the inspiring examples of my brothers and sisters in Christ, and to learn how to more effectively minister to those in need.  I am sure this is your reason too.  This is why we are willing to make sacrifices and not just declarations to follow the Savior."

Amen!

The tortoise is smiling!
