"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-359

Mile 1,091.  Tortoise was rewarded in his dreams for a white Christmas, awakening to this light dusting that came in the night.  After enjoying a fine morning with family, he went for an afternoon walk.  The weather was quite overcast and occasionally teased with a few snowflakes, but as the additional pictures will show, the white stuff is already gone.  The day's walking thought is by W. Craig Zwick ...

Cheerio!

Lou took pictures every half mile along the way, starting here
along side La Verkin Elementary School

Mile 1

Mile 1.5

Tortoise did throw in one bonus picture of this short, nice path
behind the small welcoming park at the corner of the state highways

Just past mile 2

A little more past mile 2.5

Mile 3

Overall, a nice, easy, nearly flat route for Christmas Day
Today's walk was 3.21 miles and had a 5.6 tortoise rating earned by climbing 90 feet in the 1.61 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 3222. This walk burned 498 calories in 52:55 minutes.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

1,091.03 miles walked which is 108.89% of Lou's 2015 goal.  On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 1,006.75 miles.

334:57:30 hours walked which is 107.02% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year).

60,237 total feet climbed, compared with 48,640 feet on this day in 2014.

164,017 calories burned.

98.40% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 196 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 299 of the 308 non-Sundays in 2015, a 97.08% consistency rating.  This matches his total days walked in 2014 and compares with 293 days walked through December 24 in 2014 (a 95.13% consistency rating).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.  Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's walking record up until 2013 with 2014 or 2015 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you).

And now for today's walking thought ...

"Paul warned, 'Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but [only] that which is good [and] edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.' (Ephesians 4:29) His words resonate with a certain purity.

"What does the phrase 'no corrupt communication' mean to you?  We all regularly experience highly charged feelings of anger -- our own and others'. We have seen unchecked anger erupt in public places.  We have experienced it as a sort of emotional 'electrical short' at sporting events, in the political arena, and even in our own home.  ...

"Nevertheless, what would happen to the 'corrupt communication' Paul spoke about if our position included empathy for another's experience first?  Fully owning the limits of my own imperfections and rough edges, I plead with you to practice asking this question, with tender regard for another's experience: 'What are you thinking?'  ...

"The willingness to see through each other's eyes will transform 'corrupt communication' into 'minister[ing] grace.' The Apostle Paul understood this, and on some level each of us can experience it too.  It may not change or solve the problem, but the more important possibility may be whether ministering grace could change us."

The tortoise is smiling!
