"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-1

Mile 3.  Tortoise started his walking new year by getting a ride to the office for a half day of work, then walking home in the waning portion of a bright, clear, crisp afternoon.  Lou has some ideas about what he wants to do this year, and there is a walking thought by Henry Eyring ...

Cheerio!

Bundled up proof that it's colder than it looks

Today's walk was 3.01 miles and had a 4.9 tortoise rating earned by climbing 181 feet in the 1.51 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 3264. This walk burned 447 calories in 55:50 minutes, a pace of 18:33 minutes per mile, a few ticks slower than Tortoise would like, as you are about to see.

Before we continue into the overall stats so far for 2016, here are Lou's goals for the year:

Continue the consistency of 2015, keeping the daily streak going as long as possible walking at least 2 miles each time.

Tortoise needs to scale back the time somewhat.  Last year's average was an hour and 7 minutes daily, this year Lou is going to see how much he can accomplish in 40 minutes a day.  He will try to improve at least one second on his average pace, making it 18:25 minutes per mile, while increasing his climbing at least one foot over last year's average, which means 56 feet per mile (that includes all the downhill portions, which means more has to be climbed when the hills arrive).

This adds up to 683 miles walked and 38,248 feet climbed.  Tortoise delivered on his back to back 1000 mile goal in 2014 and 2015, let's see if he can climb more, walk faster, and stay consistent as goals for 2016.

And here is his start today:

3.01 miles walked which is 0.44% of Lou's 2016 goal of 683 miles.

55:50 minutes walked which is 0.44% of the 2016 goal (which is to walk 40 minutes a day on the 314 days other than Sunday in the year).

181 total feet climbed in 2016, compared with his goal of 122 feet.

447 calories burned.

0.32% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 202 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 305 of the 314 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.13% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.

And now for today's walking thought ...

"Each of you will be a model of a priesthood man whether you want to be or not.  You became a lighted candle when you accepted the priesthood.  The Lord put you on the candlestick to light the way for everyone who surrounds you.  That is especially true for those in your priesthood quorum.  You can be a great model, and average one, or a bad model.  You may think it doesn't matter to you, but it does to the Lord.  He said it this way:

"'Ye are the light of the world.  A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.

"'Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.

"'Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.'  (Matthew 5:14-16)

"I have been blessed by examples of great priesthood holders in quorums where I was fortunate to serve.  You can do what they have done for me by being an example for others to follow.

"I have observed three common characteristics of the priesthood holders who are my heroes.  One is a pattern of prayer, the second is a habit of service, and the third is a rock-hard decision to be honest."

  1. I believe! Love the goals! After posting the huge 1100+ mileage from last year I have no doubt 683 will be accomplished. And I love the idea of climbing more. Lets see if tortoise can continue to increase his yearly climbing totals yet again, even with dropping his overall mileage

    1. Now there is a challenge for sure, Mr. Wounded Duck. The stated 2016 climbing goal is to increase one foot per mile over the 2015 pace, which was 25% higher than the 2014 climbing pace. Applied to 683 miles, this works out to a goal of 38,248 feet to be climbed in 2016.

This compares to 48,820 feet climbed by Lou in 2014 and 61,316 in 2015. So ... if Tortoise was to accept your challenge to climb more total feet, even with the drop in overall mileage, this would mean he would need to average 196 feet climbed per day, compared with his stated goal of 122 feet climbed per day.

Lou realizes this is way too many numbers, perhaps numbers are his true addiction rather than walking ...

Bottom line, is that is a lot of climbing on a daily basis, so we will just have to see how our friend the smiling Tortoise does ...

As his departed friend Paul Harvey would say, "Stay tuned for more!
