Mile 1,106. Tortoise is continuing to catch up on posts from past days when walks happened but writing didn't. This one is from December 31, 2015, a hillside loop walk in LaVerkin. Lou was quite bundled, and the picture of the day is of Chief and Stefanie keeping warm indoors. The day's walking thought is by Dieter Uchtdorf, and there's other tidbits from the five years of walking and blogging that Tortoise completed today ...
Cheerio!
Today's walk was 2.24 miles and had a 5.3 tortoise rating earned by climbing 98 feet in the 1.12 mile uphill portion. Average elevation was 3229. This walk burned 332 calories in 39:44 minutes.
Here are the overall stats for the full year of 2015:
1,106.47 miles walked which is 10.43% higher than Lou's 2015 goal of 1,002 miles (set by adding one "extra" mile to his 2014 goal of 1,001). This is 85.26 miles more than the 1,021.21 walked in 2014. It is an average of 3.64 miles for each of the 304 days he walked.
339:50:16 hours walked which is 8.57% higher than the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year). The actual 2015 average was 1:07:04 hours walked per day.
61,316 total feet climbed, an increase of 25.6% over the 48,820 feet climbed in 2014. This represents an average of 55.4 feet climbed on each mile walked in 2015.
166,288 calories burned, for an average of 547 miles per walk.
Lou has walked 201 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 304 of the 313 non-Sundays in 2015, a 97.12% consistency rating. This compares with 298 days walked through December 28 in 2014 (a 95.21% consistency rating).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he has a lifetime of setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.
If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's walking record up until 2013 with 2014 or 2015. Admittedly, the yearly totals shown below for 2011, 12, and 13 don't include the early treadmill walks, which started at less than a mile a day for the first 100 days when Tortoise was trying to regain strength after two months of daily radiation treatments. They also exclude a few Garmin walks, but here are the yearly totals measured by the MapMyFitness app: 2011 - 229.21 miles, 2012 - 311.75 miles, 2013 - 146.43 mile. Those years include 6 months with no walks at all.
For Lou, setting a daily goal and tracking actual progress has been what it has taken to be consistent. He feels much more energetic now than he did. Tortoise hopes you find what works for you, and do it.

And now for today's walking thought ...
"Don't allow selfishness! Don't allow habits that could lead to addiction! Don't allow competing priorities to lull you into indifference or detachment from blessed discipleship and ennobling ... service!
"There is too much at stake for us as individuals, as families, and as Christ's Church to give only a halfhearted effort to this sacred work.
"Being a disciple of Jesus Christ is not an effort of once a week or once a day. It is an effort of once and for all."

The tortoise is definitely smiling!
If you develop sensitivity to the symptoms of addiction, it's easier to nip those habits in the bud.
ReplyDeleteI suspect there are a lot of people who would sign up for your course on developing just the right amount of sensitivity :-)
DeleteP.S. - Ann, you may be interested to learn that Tortoise has at least one regular reader who is firmly convinced he is addicted to walking and cannot function without his daily "fix". Lou is not sure if there are others who feel this way, but who have not verbalized their concern for his mental state ...
DeleteGreat picture! Great stats! Great consistency! Great read! Great quote! Great example mr total awes! Mucho love!
