"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-37

Mile 87.  Tortoise's last appointment of the day before returning home was in Rialto.  This town added another 1.25 miles to the Pacific Electric Trail in 2015, from its western border with Fontana, on Maple Avenue, east to Cactus Avenue.  Lou previously walked this trail in both directions in segments from the Los Angeles county line in Claremont east through Montclair, Upland, Rancho Cucamonga, and Fontana.  This was a great opportunity to walk the new section and once again be able to say he had walked the whole trail, now 21 miles long.

The mountain in the distance is San Gorgonio, known to locals as Old Greyback, highest in southern California at 11,500 feet.  There's more pictures of it and the PE trail, along with the day's walking thought by Russell Ballard ...

Cheerio!

A couple pictures

of the start of the Rialto section of the trail

They continue the tradition started on the other cities along this converted
rail line to putting frequent benches, water fountains, lights, and
historical signs along the way.  Very nice!

The view looking further west into Fontana at the end of today's walk.

Here's part of the reason to build up a cushion for Wounded Duck's
meaningless challenge.  Days of virtually flat trail.  Lou enjoyed
walking it, all the same.
Today's walk was 2.48 miles and had a 6.4 tortoise rating earned by climbing 33 feet in the 1.24 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 1255.  This walk burned 408 calories in 38:43 minutes, a pace of 15:37 minutes per mile.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

87.49 miles walked which is 12.81% of Lou's 2016 goal of 683 miles.  His goal for this date is 69.61 total miles.

23:35:38 hours walked which is 11.27% of the 2016 goal (which is to walk 40 minutes a day on the 314 days other than Sunday in the year).

7,066 total feet climbed in 2016. Wounded Duck has challenged Tortoise to climb more than the 61,316 feet climbed in 2015 -- but in 40 minutes, rather than an hour daily.  To accomplish this, Tortoise needs to climb an average of 196 feet on each of the 314 walking days in 2016  ... assuming he misses no days at 6 days per week all 52 weeks (definitely quite an assumption!).  But playing along with Wounded Duck, this would mean climbing 6,272 feet in the 32 walking days so far in 2016.  So far, so good, but stay tuned.  This is a tough goal, and Tortoise is taking nothing for granted.

14,123 calories burned.

10.19% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 233 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 336 of the 345 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.39% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.  And of course, he also wants to keep the Boredom Committee supplied with plenty of boring numbers so those good folks will be happy ...

And now for today's walking thought ...

"Every time you take someone figuratively by  the hand and introduce him or her to Jesus Christ, you will feel how deeply our Savior loves you and loves the person whose hand is in yours"

-- M. Russell Ballard, quoting Clayton Christensen, "Put Your Trust In The Lord", October 2013 LDS General Conference

The tortoise is smiling!
