"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-42

Mile 100.  It was a different kind of day, in a good way.  Lou left work early, by his standards, at 6:20 pm, to walk to the community auditorium and watch his church's special needs activity program put on a performance featuring Book of Mormon heroes.  Shown above are Nephites unsuccessfully shooting arrows at Samuel the Lamanite.  It was heartwarming to watch these special people share their hearts with us!  There's more pictures, a walking thought by Dieter Uchtdorf, and information about Tortoise's walk to and from this event.  Of course he took the long way back to the office and included a hill, and tonight he slowed down somewhat and enjoyed the journey ...

Cheerio!

A few of the many performers who told part of the stories.

With lots of loving helpers letting the performers shine!

The enthusiastic audience!

Love this quilt!

Walking down State Street to the auditorium, we see
progress being made on the Wingate Inn next to DQ.

Today's walk was 3.62 miles and had a 5.3 tortoise rating earned by climbing 144 feet in the 1.81 mile uphill portion.  It was Lou's sixth 5k walk of 2016.  Average elevation was 3285.  This walk burned 539 calories in 1:08:53 hours, a pace of 19:02 minutes per mile.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

A picture borrowed from the PCT for today ...

100.07 miles walked which is 14.65% of Lou's 2016 goal of 683 miles.  His goal for this date is 78.31 total miles.

27:08:56 hours walked which is 12.97% of the 2016 goal (which is to walk 40 minutes a day on the 314 days other than Sunday in the year).

7,824 total feet climbed so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 7,056. Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- but in 40 or so minutes, rather than an hour daily.  (So far in 2016 Tortoise's walks have averaged 45:15 minutes each, compared with 1:07:04 hours each in 2015)

16,107 calories burned.

11.46% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 237 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 340 of the 349 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.42% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.  And of course, he also wants to keep the Boredom Committee supplied with plenty of boring numbers so those good folks will be happy ...

And now for today's walking thought ...

"We may think that women are more likely than men to have feelings of inadequacy and disappointment -- that these feelings affect them more than us.  I'm not sure that this is true.  Men experience feelings of guilt, depression, and failure.  We might pretend these feelings don't bother us, but they do.  We can feel so burdened by our failures and shortcomings that we begin to think we will never be able to succeed.  We might even assume that because we have fallen before, falling is our destiny.  As one writer put it, 'We beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.' (quoting F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby, page 180)

" ... our destiny is not determined by the number of times we stumble but by the number of times we rise up, dust ourselves off, and more forward."

-- Dieter F. Uchtdorf, "You Can Do It Now!", October 2013 LDS General Conference
