"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-148

Mile 413.  On day two of the trek west with the Ragozzines there were rest stops with walks in Pearl, Mississippi and Canton, Texas in addition to other rest stops in Grambling, Louisiana and Arlington, Texas.  Pictured above is the Krystal in Pearl.  The power of suggestion is strong, as the caravan passed multiple Krystals as it entered Jackson.  Good thing, as no more were viewed the rest of the way west.  Tortoise walked with the children around this parking lot, and later around a Texas sized truck stop in Canton.  Then it was on to dinner at Rudy's barbeque in Arlington, through major road construction in Ft. Worth, before ending for the day in Wichita Falls.  Enough mosquitoes were on the loose that evening that swimming in the hotel pool was cancelled and Tortoise's final walk consisted of laps down the second floor corridor, down the stairs, along the first floor hallway, up the stairs, repeated eleven times.  Yes, Tortoise did enjoy the walk, and smiled!  The day's thought was by Dieter Uchtdorf ...

Cheerio!

Tortoise's wonderful travelling companion
in the Tin Can today.

Walk at the Krystal parking lot in Pearl, MS.

Walk at the truck stop in Canton, TX.

The second floor hallway of the Quality Inn.  Tortoise smiled
at each person he passed.  Promise!

Today's walks totalled 2.33 miles, done in 50:52 minutes at an average pace of 21:50 minutes per mile. This route had an average tortoise rating of 5.8, earned by climbing 123 feet in the 1.17 mile uphill portion.  Average elevation was 860.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

413.17 miles walked, compared with Lou's goal for this date of 404.46.

29,354 total feet climbed so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 24,892. Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- but in less time each day than his 1:07:04 hour average in 2015.  So far in 2016 Tortoise's walks have averaged 56:01 minutes each.

His average pace so far in 2016 has been 17:13 minutes per mile, compared with his 18:25 minute per mile pace in 2015.

Lou has walked 328 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, 2015. Overall he has walked on 431 of the 440 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.95% consistency rating.

One step at a time can lead to great things!

And now for today's walking thought ...

"[after describing a harrowing walking journey as a young boy with his mother through the mountains to leave East Germany for the West] What I have just told you is an experience that is to me a very precious journey.  I can now look back on my life and recognize a number of such 'journeys' I have taken over time.  Not all of them involved crossing mountain ranges or political boundaries; some had more to do with overcoming trials or growing in spirituality.  But they were all journeys.  I believe that every life is a collection of individual 'journey stories'."

The tortoise is smiling!
