"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

3-131

The walk was good ... but the highlight of my day was going with Willyne
to watch our grandson Ethan play soccer.  You can tell
Uncle Doug and Riley are having a good time too!
Continued work on a route for what I am calling the La Verkin Scenic Circle trail this morning, September 8.  I hoped to do the entire circle,  but only had a little over 2 hours, and now believe it will take me 3.  So I started from the top of the Confluence Park trail at 480 South, headed to the overlook, then down basically using the route from three weeks ago with one modification that hopefully you can see on the map below ... I found a path closer to the ridge line and didn't use as much of the overlook road.  Once I got down to Wanlass Park I continued to where the La Verkin Crescent Park will be, and then on to the Confluence Park trailhead on 560 West.  At that point I was at two hours, stopped the primary walk, and started walking towards home until Willyne met me en route.

I can visualize future trailheads and parking areas on the Scenic Circle trail at the top of the Confluence Park trail on State Street near the La Verkin-Hurricane bridge, the bottom and top of the Overlook Trail, Wanlass Park, Crescent Park, the 560 West trailhead of the Confluence Park Trail, and the Confluence Park parking area and information kiosk.  People will be able to enjoy all or part of the Scenic Circle trail that includes and connects these other trails as their time permits using these various trailheads.

The first part of the walk was 5.37 miles with 663 feet climbed at a 7.2% grade in 1 hour 57 minutes.  It was a HumanaFit category 3 climb (and tortoise rating: 2.4), my first since August 24.  The second part was 0.85 miles with 42 feet climbed in 15 minutes.

This brings my chapter 3 totals to 153.00 miles walked in 59 hours 8 minutes, with 11,270 feet climbed, and 14 swims totalling 4,640 meters in 4 hour 57 minutes.  The total of my six HumanaFit category 3 walks is 22.23 miles with 3,508 feet climbed in 9 hours 0 minutes. The climbing portions of these walks have averaged a 7.61% grade.
Enjoy these pictures!

I start the pictures 2 miles into the walk, because I have included numerous pictures of the Overlook trail in earlier posts.  This shows where the path I followed leaves the Overlook road and heads gradually to the left.

We will need a cleanup project as part of trail upgrading ... clearly this was used in past years as a dumping spot.

This picture and the two that follow show the path as it descends towards the northeast end of town.

That's quite an early morning shadow

The path goes through Wanlass Park, across the signal light, and through where the Crescent Park and information kiosk will be built.  Both parks could serve as parking areas for people who wish to start or end a walk on the circular scenic trail at those points.

The path then follows 500 North to 560 West to this location, where I'm hoping the trail will continue by dropping down to the Confluence Park trailhead, and then on  to the 480 South trailhead and parking area, completing the scenic circle.

If you download the free Google Earth plugin for your browser, you can see a simulated aerial view from an airplane flying over the path.  It's kind of fun!

Today's last word ...

"A consistent, righteous life produces an inner power and strength that can be permanently resistant to the eroding influence of sin and transgression."

Cheerio!

  1. Love it! This hike is awes, maybe we could do this or the full thing the day after Observation Point

  2. Wow, that would be great! There is one short section that needs work that I would strongly encourage all participants to have flexible walking poles. It is a really nice 8 mile hike with diverse and quality scenery. Total elevation gain is maybe 1000 feet, mostly when climbing to the overlook. Lets do it! By the way, Rachel is also interested in doing it with us when she is here next summer. Clean Living!
