"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

View from the starting point on Sheep Bridge Road

I headed back to the JEM trail for another segment after work today.  Apparently the JEM trail is named for "trailblazers John, Ellen, and Mike".  For a Utah Mountain Biking web page that will tell you more, click here.

Today's segment is reached by turning left off Utah highway 59 at Sheep Bridge Road, drove 0.4 miles and parked the car just past where the trail crosses the road.  I took the trail south in the hopes of getting to my turnaround point from last Saturday's walk.  I got there in 0.9 miles, quickly enough that I continued another 0.4 miles to the top of a ridge to get in a little better workout.  Then I retraced my steps to the car.

Total distance 2.61 miles with 313 feet climbed in 50:40 minutes, carrying a 28 pound backpack.   Sunny, clear, calm, and 73 degrees, down from a high of 79 a little earlier this afternoon.  Tortoise rating:  3.6 on the uphill first half of this walk, due to a steady 4% grade and a very brief section at 20% grade at the end.

Please click here for a map, more pictures, and info on calories consumed and burned today ...

Cheerio!
Rachel, please tell me whether you prefer the format of this Garmin adventure:  http://adventures.garmin.com/en-US/by/dougbeechersr/jem-trail-segment-south-of-sheep-bridge-road/#top or this HumanaFit map ... (I'll take anyone else's comments as well :-)

  1. Your ability to find new walking paths will never cease to amaze me friend!

  2. Google is a wonderful thing. It's also helpful that when you walk one path, you often find an intersection with another ... for example, I found out about several other paths I'm interested in near you while walking the Minuteman Trail. It will be fun for me to see which of my gems you decide you're most interested in joining me on in 2014. :-)

  3. Does one of them start right by the Alewife station basically at the beginning of the trail? I feel like another path starts there but have never been for sure, if that's a path though I say we explore this one!

  4. Also, what about that trail you can see from the highway right after you pass Jacobs house but before you hit the Walmart? You can see it on both sides of the highway, do you know which one I'm talking about and have you ever walked this trail? I've always wanted to try

  5. Not only does one of them start right by the beginning of the Alewife station but you have all of this goodness: The Alewife Brook Greenway http://www.bikeitorhikeit.org/alewife_brook_greenway.htm (I've done this one :-) The Alewife Linear Parkway to Somerville http://www.traillink.com/trail/alewife-linear-parksomerville-community-path.aspx and The Fresh Pond Loop Trail (http://www.bikeitorhikeit.org/fresh_pond_loop_trail.htm)

I found more new trails along the paths of trails I walked by you than anywhere I've ever wandered. Your girls might like some of the ones that meander around ponds, lots of fun things to see there!

  6. I've walked it and written about parts of it here in terreeeblayland. Goes all the way from Sun River, through Bloomington, under the freeway, past River Road and then has two forks, one to Riverside Dr, the other to within 2 blocks of Grandmother Forsyth's apartment. It is fabulous:

    or http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2013/04/13-113.html

Segment directly across the freeway from Jacob's, near to Convention Center: http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2012/05/3-12.html

I know I did posts on the sections along Riverside Drive, but I can't seem to find them. Maybe you'd like to walk this with me when you come. It's easy (flat) and fun.
