"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Tortoise is loving this view of the sun rising through the clouds over La Verkin and the Virgin River as he completes his 4.26 mile walk to work.  He climbed 272 feet on the way in 1:24:34 hours. Tortoise rating was 4.8 and calories burned today were 670.  For a slide show to music and a thought from Glenn Pace, please click below to continue reading ...

2014 Stats:

734.29 miles walked, which is 73.36% of my 2014 goal.
232:16:33 hours walked, which is 74.21% of my 2014 goal
35,204 total feet climbed
117,260 calories burned
70.29% of the year has passed

I've walked 29 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on August 11, and overall have walked on 208 of the 220 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 94.55% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells me I am on track. I'm sure this is more numbers than you are interested in, all I can say is I'm really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because I don't do them every, every day.

And now for a thought heard on today's walk from Glenn Pace:

We must reach out beyond the walls of our own church. In humanitarian work, as in other areas of the gospel, we cannot become the salt of the earth if we stay in one lump in the cultural halls of our beautiful meetinghouses. We need not wait for a call or an assignment from a Church leader before we become involved in activities that are best carried out on a community or individual basis.
When we get emotionally and spiritually involved in helping a person who is in pain, a compassion enters our heart. It hurts, but the process lifts some of the pain from another. We get from the experience a finite look into the Savior’s pain as He performed the infinite Atonement. Through the power of the Holy Ghost, a sanctification takes place within our souls and we become more like our Savior. We gain a better understanding of what was meant when He said, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.”

  1. Tortoise has not only bee consistent beyond compare this year with his walks, but I'd venture a guess of almost 100% consistency in sharing a gospel themed message since reading the call to action by Elder Bednar a few weeks back. Congratulations to the Tortoise on his #ShareGoodness achievements, and I have especially enjoyed your thoughts and posts.

Today's post is another great reminder that real service and real discipleship requires more than just acts; it requires "all" of us. Pretty powerful idea that we must get "emotionally and spiritually" involved with those in need, to the point that we should feel and share in their pain, if we are doing things correctly. How many times have I completed "fly-by" type service when in reality the Lord needed my whole heart! Much to ponder and improve upon.

Love and kudos to the Tortoise for his awesome example!!
