"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Tortoise headed out on a walk between sessions of General Conference.  He wanted to get a little more hill climbing and heart exercise than normal.  Confluence Park is always a go to place for this.  It begins less than a mile from the house and is protected from the normal city noise making it quite peaceful.   Thinking things would have dried off enough from the recent heavy rains to be passable, Tortoise headed out to the park.

His first stop was at his mother's house, 0.3 miles into the walk.  It was good to see that she is breathing better than usual!  After that visit, the walk continued to the west end of Center Street, where the picture shown above was taken.  For those of you who texted in before the walk wondering where Confluence Park is, this is a pretty good aerial view.  The Virgin River is visible to the left and the trees in the middle is the confluence where La Verkin Creek and Ash Creek both join the river about a hundred feet from each other.

Cheerio!

This seems like a good walk to give you an aerial view as well, so check out this contribution from our friends at Google Earth ...

Sometimes this overhead view is fuzzy the first time, if so, just try to replay it.  That usually fixes the problem.

This walk was 3.44 miles with 243 feet climbed in a mile coming out of the southeast end of the park.  Tortoise's battery died, which added six minutes to the clock.  The actual time was 1:07:18 hours.  Tortoise rating was 3.8 and 558 calories were burned along the way.

Here's the view along the river as the climb back out of the park approaches.
If you've ever looked down at the park from the coffee shop at about 350 S. State,
that would be the tiny white building above the trees in the middle of the picture,
and this is what is looks like from the bottom looking back up.  Nice view both ways!
2014 Stats:

786.64 miles walked, which is 78.59% of my 2014 goal.
248:07:24 hours walked, which is 79.27% of my 2014 goal
37,213 total feet climbed
125,662 calories burned
76.04% of the year has passed
I've walked 12 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on September 20, and overall have walked on 225 of the 238 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 94.54% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells me I am on track. I'm sure this is more numbers than you are interested in, all I can say is I'm really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because I don't do them every, every day.

Today's walking message came from the current General Conference as Tortoise took a one day break from listening to 1991.   It's Neil Anderson quoting Neal Maxwell, short, but classic:

“Studying the Church through the eyes of its detractors is like interviewing Judas to understand Jesus.”

To watch or listen to this message, or any others in conference, please visit https://www.lds.org/general-conference/sessions/2014/10?lang=eng. #ShareGoodness They will have a printed version available in a few days, check back at that same address then when you would like to read it.

The tortoise is smiling!
