Mile 886. Today's two walks took Tortoise 3.43 miles, first on the Riverside Drive connection between the two Virgin River Trail segments, then on a loop from the house up the hill above the elementary school, in a total of 1:01:26 hours. There were 142 feet climbed in 1.16 miles along the way, giving that portion a 4.9 tortoise rating. The rest of the path was flat or downhill. Lou burned 512 calories doing this.

The beginning of the St. George portion of the Virgin River Trail on Waterfront Drive |
Turn a 90 degree angle from the first picture and you get the view down Waterfront Drive as you begin walking towards the other Virgin River Trail segment |
Waterfront Drive has homes on the north side of the street and a nice view of the river and surrounding wetlands on the other side of the street |
Waterfront Drive soon becomes 2750 East and shortly thereafter ends at Riverside Drive. The sidewalk on that street becomes the trail for a little over a half mile |
There is a little hill as Riverside Drive approaches the turn that marks its transition to being 3000 East |
The sign on the right and the KV Electric building beyond it is your landmark to turn on to the Millcreek Trail |
In less than a mile, the Millcreek Trail crosses into Washington City where it once again is named the Virgin River Trail. |

2014 Stats:
886.23 miles walked, which is 88.53% of my 2014 goal.
279:25:14 hours walked, which is 89.27% of my 2014 goal
43,644 total feet climbed

84.66% of the year has passed
Weigh-in: 225.4, down 0.3 from my last weigh-in on October 23 and continuing a drop of a total of 12.7 pounds since July 1.
I've walked 39 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on September 20, and overall have walked on 252 of the 265 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 95.09% consistency rating.
The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.
And now for more of today's walking thought, originally presented in October 1992:
"I want you to know that having one arm for nearly thirty years has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. It hasn’t been my greatest challenge, but it has been a great teacher to me, teaching me to be more patient and tolerant with others as I have had to learn to be more patient with myself. It has helped me to understand the necessity of our having challenges in life to help develop our character and stamina, helping us to become what the Lord ultimately wants us to become.
"Our challenges may be physical, spiritual, economic, or emotional, but if we will treat them as opportunities and stepping-stones in our progress, rather than barriers and stumbling blocks, our lives and growth will be wonderful."
