"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

14-311

Mile 891.  The Family History Fair Willyne and I (and many others) have been working on for most of a year is tomorrow.  I headed out on today's 2.82 mile walk right after helping to put up this banner, then helped setup the Fair the rest of the day.   The path began at home, went to the highway and back, then up Main Street and back, in 49:34 minutes. There were 91 feet climbed in 1.41 miles along the way, giving that portion a 5.5 tortoise rating.  The rest of the path was flat or downhill.  413 calories were burned doing this.

Please click below for a map and today's walking thought by Marion Hanks.  And see you at the Fair tomorrow, there are so many good ideas waiting for you here, and it will be fun learning them!

Cheerio!

2014 Stats:

891.14 miles walked, which is 89.02% of my 2014 goal.
280:55:12 hours walked, which is 89.75% of my 2014 goal
43,838 total feet climbed
141,805 calories burned
85.30% of the year has passed

I've walked 41 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on September 20, and overall have walked on 254 of the 267 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 95.13% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.

And now for more of today's walking thought, originally presented in October 1992:

"I have had the privilege of association with people of character and quality who shared much of value with me. Consider this special example of the wisdom of a beloved Quaker teacher and writer, Rufus Jones, who said:
“'Vital religion cannot be maintained and preserved on the theory that God dealt with our human race only in the far past ages, and that the Bible is the only evidence we have that our God is a living, revealing, communicating God. If God ever spoke, He is still speaking. He is the great I Am, not the great He Was.' (A Flash of Eternity.)
"This is a significant expression of fundamental truth. Our own understanding of that principle is that God communicates with his children, and that he has revealed, does now reveal, and will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to his kingdom.
"Jewish tradition helps us further appreciate the nature of our Heavenly Father in the tender practice of the Half Hallels offered at Passover in celebration of the historic exodus of the children of Israel from Egypt and their passing through the Red Sea. When they reached the sea, the pursuing Egyptian armies overtook them. Through Moses, God divided the waters, “And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground.” (Ex. 14:22.) The Egyptians went in after them. Then Moses stretched his hand again over the sea, and the waters returned. The Israelites were safe, and the Egyptian armies were drowning. Triumphantly the people began to sing hymns of praise to the Lord. But the Almighty stopped them and said, 'How can you sing hymns of praise and jubilation when so many of my children are drowning in the sea?'
"In remembrance of that event, Jewish people during the latter period of Passover include abridged or shortened psalms of praise, Half Hallels, as part of the celebration."
