"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

15-134

Mile 373.  We've been praying for rain in this valley.  Pretty fervently.  We got it today, along with wind, thunder, lightning, ... and, as pictured above, pounding hail, at one point.  Just coming off bronchitis, Tortoise did not dare put on a coat and hat and venture out into the weather.  But Lou is also coming off 8 straight missed days while ill.  He is feeling this in his lungs and his legs as he tries to resume walking.

Tortoise is thankful to have moved on from Terreeeblay, his treadmill.  Lou much prefers the scenery and fresh air found outside.  But today would have been a good day to turn to Terreeeblay, had it been available.  Today, following an evening of helping Jacob & Hilary navigate the neighborhoods of South Central, participating in Special Needs Mutual, and doing a tax return with an out-of-town couple by Skype when they got home from work, Tortoise's answer was to walk laps in his house. 72 of them, starting at the top of the set of stairs near the entrance, through the dining room and kitchen, down the other set of stairs to the play room, into the living room and entry hall, then up the stairs to the point of beginning.

This walk was one of the hardest ones Tortoise can remember doing in some time.  He had initially hoped to do 100 laps, but wound up settling for the 72 that he completed in an hour.and small change.  To find out how far that was, and other potentially boring tidbits (what say ye, Boredom Committee?), please click below to continue reading.  You'll also get today's walking thought by D. Todd Christofferson (yes, Tortoise hooked up his earphones and listened as he did this walk).

Cheerio!

Tortoise completed today's 2.13 mile walk in 1:00:53 hours  Tortoise rating was 2.6, based on 396 feet climbed in the 1.07 mile uphill portion (average elevation 3221). 293 calories were burned along the way.  Lou was surprised the distance is that low, as he felt like he was walking at a reasonable pace and didn't take any breaks.  It is an estimate, based on counting 65 paces to do one loop, 2.4 feet per pace, and 72 loops.  The climbing is based on a guess that 5.5 feet were climbed on each loop, then multiplying that by 72 loops.  It felt like climbing that much ... and more.

Lou did also track the walk using the Map My Fitness iPhone app. It showed 1.44 miles and no climbing.  Tortoise has generally found the app to be reasonably accurate, but this time, sorry, it had to be more than 1.44 miles in the hour.  Tortoise's walking map provider, www.mapmyfitness.com, has changed formats and the maps haven't transferred to this blog as well since.  (Lou keeps trying without success.)  Instead of embedding the map, let's try this link and see if that works better for you to see the details of their version of today's walk:

And here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

373.24 miles walked, which is 37.25% of Lou's 2015 goal. On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 379.52 year-to-date miles.

111:54:08 hours walked, which is 35.75% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year)

18,859 total feet climbed, compared with 17,630 feet on this day in 2014.

55,898 calories burned

36.74% of the year has passed

Lou has walked 3 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11. Overall he has walked on 106 of the 115 non-Sundays in 2015, a 92.17% consistency rating, compared with 108 out of the first 115 non-Sundays in 2014 (93.91%).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's 2013 walking record with 2014 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent. And Tortoise feels much more vibrant when he is consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you)

And now for today's walking thought, initially presented in October 1998:

“When they arrived at the farm gate, Francis jumped down off the big red beet wagon and opened the gate as [his father] drove onto the field. [George] pulled up, stopped the team, … and scanned the field. … There wasn’t a sugar beet on the whole field. Then it dawned upon him what Jasper Rolfe meant when he called out: ‘That’s all of ‘em, Uncle George!’
“[George] got down off the wagon, picked up a handful of the rich, brown soil he loved so much, and then … a beet top, and he looked for a moment at these symbols of his labor, as if he couldn’t believe his eyes.
“Then [he] sat down on a pile of beet tops—this man who brought four of his loved ones home for burial in the course of only six days; made caskets, dug graves, and even helped with the burial clothing—this amazing man who never faltered, nor flinched, nor wavered throughout this agonizing ordeal—sat down on a pile of beet tops and sobbed like a little child.
“Then he arose, wiped his eyes, … looked up at the sky, and said: ‘Thanks, Father, for the elders of our ward.’” 1

  2. I was hoping you would like it, I can tell you that all that stair climbing was quite a workout. I was exhausted when done with it!
