"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Mile 843.  Through the river ...

and over the woods ...

to Grandmother's house we go!

What, that isn't how the song goes?  Well it's how today's walk went.  You may remember about a month ago (September 19) Lou discovered that Chub Trace, one of the Confluence Park trails, fords the Virgin River.  Today was the appointed day to check it out this new way to approach the steep Tortoise Track hill, but it got iffy when we got a second day of intermittent rain.  A little after 6 pm, when a second hard rain ended, Tortoise decided to go for it.  Lou thinks it made for some especially nice picture taking conditions, why don't you let him know what you think ...

Cheerio!

Getting ready to cross

Made it.  Lou got wet to the top of his legs and had to be careful
on the slick rocks, but it was fun.  Having said that, Tortoise prefers
the Virgin River trail crossing to this one -- not nearly so many
rocks to contend with.

Looking back from where he's come

Then turning around to continue walking

Amazing clouds today

Tortoise track seems steeper than 12%, but that's what the map below says ...

Today's walks totalled 3.67 miles, with a 4.0 tortoise rating earned by climbing 406 feet in the 1.84 mile uphill portions.  Average elevation was 3179.  This walk burned 572 calories.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2015:

843.62 miles walked, which is 84.19% of Lou's 2015 goal.  On this day in 2014, Tortoise had walked 826.45 year-to-date miles.

258:49:28 hours walked, which is 82.69% of the 2015 goal (which is to walk 1 hour a day on the 313 days other than Sunday in the year).

44,833 total feet climbed, compared with 39,923 feet on this day in 2014.

126,497 calories burned.

79.55% of the year has passed.

Lou has walked 137 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11.  Overall he has walked on 240 of the 249 non-Sundays in 2015, a 96.39% consistency rating.  This compares with 236 days walked in the same period in 2014 (a 94.78% consistency rating).

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of both distance and of time walked than of the year.  This tells Tortoise that he is on track.  Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.  (If you doubt this, compare Tortoise's walking record up until 2013 with 2014 or 2015 ... for him, it is what it takes to be consistent.  And Tortoise feels much more vibrant when he is consistent.  He hopes you find what works for you).

And now for today's two walking thoughts (Tortoise was doing some family history training today, and part of the homework was to listen to these two talks, so he did it while walking -- who says a slow Tortoise can't multitask?) ...

"Do you young people want a sure way to eliminate the influence of the adversary in your life?  Immerse yourself in searching for your ancestors, prepare their names for the sacred vicarious ordinances available in the temple, and then go to the temple to stand as proxy for them to receive the ordinances of baptism and the gift of the Holy Ghost.  As you grow older, you will be able to participate in receiving the other ordinances as well.  I can think of no greater protection from the influence of the adversary in your life."

"Elijah appeared with Moses on the Mount of Transfiguration (see Matthew 17:3) and conferred this [sacred sealing authority] upon Peter, James, and John ...

"I invite the young people of the Church to learn about and experience the Spirit of Elijah.  I encourage you to study, to search out your ancestors, and to prepare yourselves to perform proxy baptisms in the house of the Lord for your kindred dead. And I urge you to help other people identify their family histories.

"As you respond in faith to this invitation, your hearts shall turn to the fathers.  ... Your love and gratitude for your ancestors will increase.  Your testimony and conversion to the Savior will become deep and abiding.  And I promise you will be protected against the intensifying influence of the adversary.  As you participate in and love this holy work, you will be safeguarded in your youth and throughout your lives."

  2. Thank you, Anne. I've taken several other pictures of the old powerhouse, and I think this one's my favorite. The weather conditions were ideal. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
