"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

16-121

Mile 324.  For a second day in a row, Tortoise enjoyed an accompanied walk with one of his children.  Now there is a true treat!  Today it was with Benjamin, and it set 2016 year-to-date records for hardest trail (with a tortoise rating of 1.3) and most feet climbed (802).  Benjamin likes to encourage Lou to get his heart rate up by adding more elevation gain to his walks, so he suspects this record won't last long.  He's already talking about new attempts on Zion's East Rim and on Timpanogos, for example.

As with yesterday's walk, the company was excellent, and there are some lovely scenic views as well along the way from Indian Road Trailhead (just off Canyon Road at 5500 North near the mouth of Provo Canyon) to the Bonneville Shoreline Trail.  Today's thought is by Bonnie Oscarson ...

Cheerio!

The Bonneville Shoreline Trail signs show up about this point

Today's walk was 3.59 miles, done in 85:33 minutes at an average pace of 23:50 minutes per mile.  This route had an average 1.3 tortoise rating earned by climbing 802 feet in the 1.80 mile uphill portion. Average climbing grade was 7.3%, with some segments of the path peaking at an 11% grade.  Average elevation was 5334.  This walk burned 580 calories.

It was Lou's fifty-ninth 5k walk of the year.  It's the second time he has walked on the Bonneville Shoreline Trail, the first being back in 2012 in Davis County, so this for sure was a new segment of an established trail.

Here are the overall stats so far for 2016:

324.89 miles walked, compared with Lou's goal for this date of 331.21 miles.

23,505 total feet climbed so far in 2016, compared to a year-to-date goal of 20,384. Lou hopes to climb more than the 61,316 feet he climbed in 2015 -- but in 16 minutes less each day than his 1:07:04 hour average in 2015.  So far in 2016 Tortoise's walks have averaged 51:39 minutes each.

His average pace so far in 2016 has been 16:32 minutes per mile, somewhat more tortoise like than his goal of 16:05 minutes per mile, but a noticeable difference from his 18:25 minute per mile pace in 2015.

Lou has walked 305 consecutive non-Sundays since his 8 missed days May 2-11, Overall he has walked on 408 of the 417 non-Sundays in 2015-16, a 97.84% consistency rating.

One step at a time can lead to great things!

And now for today's walking thought ...

"If these things are true, then we have the greatest message of hope and help that the world has ever known.  Believing them is a matter of eternal significance for us and those we love."

The Tortoise is smiling!
