"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Mile 420.  Tortoise got to an appointment in Santa Fe Springs a little early, so he snuck in most of the day's walk then.  Then on his way home Lou exercised extra resistance, stopping at the Wendy's on Roy Rogers Drive in Victorville where he could get a grilled chicken sandwich and substitute chili for the fries, rather than eating the quite delicious offerings at the nearby In-N-Out.  This after filling up for gas at the Costco for the low, low price (by California standards) of $3.499 and finishing up the rest of his walk in their parking lot.

Mile 418.  Tortoise previously walked The Strand in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach, then discovered it was part of the Marvin Braude Trail that follows the coastline as far north as Santa Monica, so he started making his way that direction.   Today he was closer to Torrance, so it was a good day to find the beginning point of the trail adjacent to Miramar Park, pictured above with the Palos Verdes Peninsula in the background.  From there, Lou walked through the Redondo Beach Pier up to the starting point of The Strand before returning.

Mile 412.  Tortoise headed over to continue walking the San Gabriel River Trail on his way between appointments, this time covering from trail mile 23 to 20.75 in both directions plus connections off trail to a parking place.  This trail segment is near two heavily traveled freeways, Interstate 605 and State Route 60, but what Lou saw along the way was the Whittier Narrows Nature Reserve, a dam, lots of foliage, and the Pico Rivera Golf Course.  The Golf Course has a welcoming sign on the trail offering free water along with various menu items.

Mile 406.  Tortoise parked his car at the Route 66 Trailhead on Foothill Blvd. in Rancho Cucamonga, CA, slightly west of Vineyard/Carnelian, and walked uphill on the Pacific Electric Trail as far as Archibald, at a point a little north of Baseline and pictured above.  This walk covered trail miles 5 1/4 to 7 in both directions, plus a little extra on each end.  For more pictures, a map, and the day's walking thought by Neal Maxwell, please click below to continue reading ...

Mile 402.  Entered the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve this evening at the Millcreek Trailhead, which is 1.3 miles up a path walkers and mountain bikers share with ATVs.  Tortoise continued to the point pictured above, which was a quarter mile past the junction with the Bone Wash Trail, then he retraced his steps to his parked car while there was still light.  For more pictures, maps, and today's walking thought by James Faust, please click below to continue reading ...
