"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Approaching Gould's Rim Trailhead
Continuing my preview of the various paths in the Hurricane Cliffs Trail System in preparation to do the whole 20 mile loop one day in the future.  I'm glad I'm preparing this way, because this trail is not always easy to follow.  If you've been once, or are with someone who has, sure it's pretty easy to follow.  If not ... well, I'll let the pictures a little later tell the story.

For today, it was 1.65 miles with 72 feet climbed in 30:10 minutes.  Conditions were the kind you wish you could bottle and have available always:  Clear, bright, sunny, calm, 72 degrees.  Tortoise rating:  5.4.  HumanaFit doesn't go below category 5 and didn't rate this walk.

Cheerio!

You get here by taking the dirt road slight right headed south on Utah highway 59
just past the stop sign at the end of Sheep Bridge Rd. on the left.  Go 0.8 miles, pass
the cattle guard, and in another 0.3 miles you will be driving towards my black Impala
on the road to the left in the picture above.  (If you continue you will soon reach the former
location of Diamond Ranch Academy.  Or you can do a 315 degree turn and head down the
left road above towards the north end of the Goulds Rim Trail (more on that another day)
If you are following the generally recommended counter clockwise loop of the various trails
in the Hurricane Cliffs system and are finishing the connector road from the Goulds Rim Trail
at this intersection with the two roads shown above, the only help you will get from these signs
shown in this picture is to look somewhere near the "rough corral" noted in the small rectangular
sign near the ground.  If you look closely you will see something that looks like the sign
to the right here.  Go to it. It will be the sign you are looking for.
Here's what the sign looks like when you get past the rough corral.  The BLM map
makes it look like you would see this sign right at the road junction, it's actually
0.08 miles to the east.  If you continue 2.3 miles you will reach Utah Highway 59
directly across from the JEM Trailhead.  (For a map and description, please click here.)

View back past the rough corral to the cars from the start of the Goulds Trail.
Today's walk takes us 0.7 miles down this rough dirt road to the Goulds Rim
Trailhead.  You can drive a car on it, carefully, but you might also enjoy parking
where I did and walking the connector road and then continuing on the trail.

Information at the Gould's Rim Trailhead.  Rough parking area, but no restrooms
here.  I think the map on this sign is more useful in some ways than the BLM map,
because it leaves off a couple roads shown on the BLM map that no longer exist.
That clarifies things, at least for me, if you're trying to find your way to the right trailhead.

The official beginning of the Gould's Rim Trail.  Sign says it is 3.0 miles long.
BLM map indicates 3.14 miles.  Either way, you will need to plan to retrace
your steps when done, have a car at the other end, or continue on 2.24 miles
on the connector road back to the Hurricane Hill Trailhead on Highway 59.
(and arrange to have someone meet you there)

Beautfiul view to the east returning to the car from Gould's Rim Trailhead

The entire length of the Pine Valley Mountains make a majestic backdrop
as you walk north on a part of the return trip to where I left my car.

The little white buildings are the former location of Diamond Ranch Academy,
a little over a mile to the southeast as viewed from my path

Terrific views in all directions.  This one is of the Kolob Terrace section
of Zion National Park, looking northeast from the path.
