"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Mile 870.  Today's walk took Tortoise 2.32 miles up and down the street from his office in 47:34 minutes. The construction across the street continues, it's shaping up to be a beautiful building for Paparazzi.. There were 34 feet climbed in 1.16 miles along the way, giving that section a 5.8 tortoise rating.  The rest of the path was flat or downhill.  Lou burned 348 calories doing this.

Tortoise got done with business in St. George, and being a Saturday afternoon, set out for a little bit longer walk and a little exploring.  Back on October 1, Lou checked out the Virgin River Trail upstream from the Sullivan Virgin River Soccer Park, and got stopped by the finishing touches of bridge construction.  He headed back today, and was rewarded with a beautiful trail.  Shown above is the junction of the Cottonwood Wash Trail headed left from the Virgin River Trail going straight ahead.  Looks like a bicyclist's dream, and makes for nice walking as well!  Please click below for a map, more pictures, and details of this 5.08 mile walk along with today's walking thought by Robert Hales, "I became overwhelmed with a feeling of gratitude for the goodness of God."

It was a two walk day for Tortoise today.  He drove his dear lady to the Las Vegas airport so she could visit our daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren far, far away.  Too far.

A short distance from the airport is this fine trailhead pictured above, located just south of Sahara on Lamb.  Tortoise parked nearby and headed out.  First order of business was to cross Lamb on the bridge pictured above and head west to the US 95/I-515 freeway, which was where Tortoise left the Flamingo Arroyo trail on his last adventure on it back on July 25 (It's worth clicking on that link just to see the picture of the Mighty Turtles one more time!).  Once that was done, he retraced his steps and then continued east with a plan to go as far as Nellis and return.  Tortoise made it most of the way before construction forced a retreat.  When you click below to continue reading, you'll see a picture of that along with other pictures, a description of the day's second walk, plus maps of both walks.  And today's walking message by William Bradford.  It includes the thought "Nothing suits the devil better than to become a silent partner with us."

2014 Stats:

820.25 miles walked, which is 81.94% of my 2014 goal.
259:00:42 hours walked, which is 82.75% of my 2014 goal
39,750 total feet climbed
131,008 calories burned
78.91% of the year has passed

Weigh-in:  226.2, down 2.2 from my last weigh-in on September 26 and continuing a drop of a total of 11.9 pounds since July 1.

I've walked 21 consecutive non-Sundays since my last missed day on September 20, and overall have walked on 234 of the 247 non-Sundays thus far in 2014, a 94.74% consistency rating.

The purpose of the percentages is to have a higher percentage of distance and time walked than of the year. This tells Tortoise that he is on track. Yes, this is more numbers than you are likely interested in, all Tortoise can say is he's really good at setting high goals and having them slip away because he doesn't do them every, every day.

And now for more of today's walking thought, from one of the inspirational messages Tortoise listened to along the way tonight, entitled "Becoming Self-Reliant" originally recorded in October 1991 by Tom Perry.

"Then Nephi asked the Lord, “Whither shall I go that I may find ore to molten, that I may make tools to construct the ship after the manner which thou hast shown unto me?” (1 Ne. 17:9).
"The Lord instructed Nephi where he could find ore, but then Nephi was on his own. In 1 Nephi, chapter 17, we read:
“And it came to pass that I, Nephi, did make a bellows wherewith to blow the fire, of the skins of beasts; and after I had made a bellows, that I might have wherewith to blow the fire, I did smite two stones together that I might make fire. …
“And it came to pass that I did make tools of the ore which I did molten out of the rock.”
"This is one of the more interesting stories we have in the scriptures because it tells of an instance in which the Lord provided help but then stepped aside to allow one of His sons to exercise his own initiative. I have sometimes wondered what would have happened if Nephi had asked the Lord for tools instead of a place to find the ore to make the tools. I doubt the Lord would have honored Nephi’s request. You see, the Lord knew that Nephi could make the tools, and it is seldom the Lord will do something for us that we can do for ourselves.
"The Lord does help when we go to Him in times of need, especially when we are committed to His work and respond to His will. But the Lord only helps those who are willing to help themselves. He expects His children to be self-reliant to the degree they can be"

The second time was the charm for walking the T-Bone Trail in the Red Cliffs Desert Reserve, rated at 2.4 tortoises on the uphill portion.  Round trip for this trail is 4.29 miles from the parking area on the west side of Pioneer Park, through the new park that is being constructed slightly to the east, to the T-Bone trailhead on Cottonwood Road.  There is a lot of elevation gains and drops along the way, which Tortoise measured at 509 feet.  The official BLM figures are a little less, go check them out here, then walk the trail yourself, and add a comment below with your own experience.

Tortoise headed out on a walk between sessions of General Conference.  He wanted to get a little more hill climbing and heart exercise than normal.  Confluence Park is always a go to place for this.  It begins less than a mile from the house and is protected from the normal city noise making it quite peaceful.   Thinking things would have dried off enough from the recent heavy rains to be passable, Tortoise headed out to the park.

His first stop was at his mother's house, 0.3 miles into the walk.  It was good to see that she is breathing better than usual!  After that visit, the walk continued to the west end of Center Street, where the picture shown above was taken.  For those of you who texted in before the walk wondering where Confluence Park is, this is a pretty good aerial view.  The Virgin River is visible to the left and the trees in the middle is the confluence where La Verkin Creek and Ash Creek both join the river about a hundred feet from each other.

It was a two walk day for Tortoise today.  He had a little time after work and before dinner and evening appointments, so he headed to the Sullivan Virgin River Soccer Park (where they now have a sign showing where three beautiful soccer fields will be constructed, so progress is being made) to see how far the Virgin River Trail goes ...

The answer is in the picture above.  About three quarters of a mile of freshly paved trail upstream from the soccer park, a beautiful wood bridge is being constructed.  More trail can be seen beyond the bridge, which will be exciting to go walk once the construction is done ... probably any day now as they were putting the finishing touches on the bridge today.
