"The Blog Almost Too Boring To Be The Most Boring Blog in America ... for Over 5 Years!"

until it got too many red cards from Wounded Duck and the Boredom Enforcement Committee ... now the tortoise's goal is to get to 10 red cards so he can get Big Dog to drive down and take a good long walk with the tortoise

P. S. This blog listens to its readers. We have the Benjamin Category Override for 5+ mile walks and now, it humbles Tortoise to say he has been named "Lou", by Doug Jr, in memory of Mr. Consistency himself, Lou Gehrig. Tortoise can hardly type the words to think he is in any way comparable to the noble Iron Horse. Thank you!

Doug Jr. sent me this picture today of London's newly remodeled Hyde Park chapel of The Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.  It has many good memories for me, and it is timely today, after
a busy day of Church meetings, he joined Willyne and I to watch a recording of
Friday's opening ceremonies of the Olympics.  Loved the history, pegeantry, and much more!

We had a well earned day of rest today.  I estimate I walked 0.50 miles in 12 minutes, with 20 feet climbed up stairs, over the course of the day.  Chapter 3 totals are now 89.52 miles walked in 35 hours 39 minutes, with 5,280 feet climbed (same as the distance from sea level to the 13th step of the west entrance of the Colorado State Capitol building -- exactly one mile), and 11 swims totalling 4,240 meters in 4 hour 34 minutes.

My weigh-in this morning was 251.8, down 0.8 pounds since my last weigh-in on July 7, and 17.9 pounds total for chapter 3 -- my recommitment since May 1.

W2 is area 2 of the Western Region, 591 is Utah National Park Council's number, 12 is the year, and it is the 5th Wood Badge held by our council in 2012.  I know, more than you wanted to know ... but this IS the terreeeblay blog after all!

Finished my trip home today after being delayed long enough out of Jacksonville that I missed my connection in Atlanta last night.  Today's walk was across the airport terminal in Salt Lake City:  0.84 miles, with 23 feet climbed, in 15 minutes.  Chapter 3 totals are now 81.98 miles walked in 32 hours 29 minutes, with 4,580 feet climbed, and 11 swims totalling 4,240 meters in 4 hour 34 minutes.  Of course, that doesn't include the walking in Atlanta nor the best walk of the day ... the short one in St. George to curbside and Doug waiting to take me the last lap to La Verkin.  Thanks!

However, I was not in the mood to give the Pitt a second chance, and so instead went for a mixture of

You just never know what the tortoise will find on his journeys.  I was minding my own business looking for a place to walk to get some elevation, knowing I would be crossing the Continental Divide today.  The gas station attendant in Springerville, AZ was the first person to tip me off to the existence of Pie Town, and that simply to tell me that if I blinked I would miss the town entirely.  Well, if you don't blink, here's what you'll get...

Arizona highways, and my location last night :-)
Greetings from Cibola and Quartzsite, La Paz County, Arizona!  I walked 0.55 miles in 12 minutes this evening.  I can't get the map to show elevations, but it was hilly so I know it was at least 20 feet.  Tortoise rating:  6.6. Mohave County, Arizona is the second largest in the country with over 13,000 square miles (you could put Massachusetts in it with ample room to spare) so maybe you aren't surprised I didn't get farther than my neighboring county today on my magical mystery tour to deliver the Ragozzine van to their new Florida home, but I did get in a short category 5 walk there:  0.76 miles with 157 feet climbed in 20 minutes.  Tortoise rating:  2.3.

The dark volcanic rocks ahead make a pretty contrast to the blue sky and the
almost white dry grass  just a quarter  mile up the La Verkin Overlook Trail

Finished my last dose of antibiotics today.  I think Floryne was right, I was at least bordering on going from a virus to pneumonia.  The congestion was deep and is just today finally seeming to mostly be past.  Yea!  To quote Darin, I "derecommend" sickness as a weight loss technique, and we will see if the tortoise can keep it off as health returns.  With that said, my weekly weigh-in this morning was 252.6, down 4.5 pounds over the past week, and 17.2 pounds total for chapter 3 -- my recommitment since May 1.

I basically repeated last Saturday's walk today ... another attempt to increase lung capacity.  I am beginning to believe my lifetime of dealing with serious allergies had even more impact on me than I thought ... so I need to work harder to get enough air to do the everyday things I want to do.  So ... today I went 1.38 miles    in 42 minutes, climbing 312 feet in the process.  It was my first HumanaFit rated category 4 climb, which is interesting since last Saturday was rated category 3.  Tortoise rating:  1.8.  (Please continue reading to see a couple more pictures, map, and other details of the day)

This evening's walk is dedicated to my favorite soccer player, Ethan.  This little fellow is pure energy, and my walking path reminded me of him!

I walked 1.05 miles in 21 minutes this evening, climbing 85 feet in the process.  It was my ninth HumanaFit category 5 climb, and first since yesterday, July 5.  Tortoise rating:  4.6.  Totals of my category 5 climbs is 16.74 miles with 1,319 feet climbed in 5 hours 56 minutes.

Chapter 3 totals are 66.04 miles walked in 26 hours 10 minutes, with 3,586 feet climbed, and 11 swims totalling 4,240 meters in 4 hour 34 minutes.  Here's a map (so Ethan can see why it reminded me of him):

Third day of five on antibiotics.  That and a second night back on the C-PAP machine and I could breathe this morning.  I'm still trying to beat this bug, but just being able to breathe is a wonderful improvement!

OK, I should be on the machine every night.  That's a given, reminded by the fact that my blood pressure was good at the doctor two days ago, and the rest of my vital signs were normal, but my oxygen count was low.  errrrr.  You may know we have lots of little people at our home these days, and I move a lot when I sleep, which means the machine periodically leaks air, producing extra noise until I move back to a position more to its liking. (None of which I am conscious of while it is occurring, of course).  So I decided to lay off the machine for a few weeks.  Apparently this was a bigger sacrifice than I realized.

Anyway, I went back to work this afternoon, and went on a walk half the length I would have liked, just to keep going on it at some level.  For where I am right now, I think it was about right.

So for you fellow number lovers (and also you especially hardy souls who read clear to the last word), here goes:

The tortoise continued gradual improvement against the virus this morning.  Willyne, Floryne, and I celebrated the 4th by walking in the LaVerkin parade pulling the red wagon with Chloe and Abigail, waving and throwing candy.  It's a fun tradition!  We went 0.80 miles in 24 minutes, climbing 52 feet in the process.
